Default 5th Gear : S9 EP9 : 5th June, 2006 - Discussion

This week’s guest is aspiring racing driver Paul O’Neill – the brother of former Spice Girl Mel C (Sporty Spice). Paul races Vicki to find out what’s quickest – diesel or petrol. Vicki will be in the most powerful hot hatch, the Vauxhall Astra VXR, and Paul will be in a special diesel version.

One new race series features the world’s most expensive supercars. Tiff races an Aston Martin DBR9 in the brand-new GT3 Championship, against rivals driving Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis and the like. We follow Tiff and his co-driver Tom Alexander, the boss of Virgin Mobile, through their first race weekend at Silverstone.

The Lexus GS450h is the first high-performance hybrid vehicle, with an electric motor helping out a traditional petrol engine. But Jason Plato is more interested in testing Lexus’ renowned levels of luxury. Is it so quiet you can literally hear a pin drop inside? And if it is so refined, will a long drive make his heart-rate slow down?

How many contortionists can you fit into a small city car? The presenters find out as they attempt to beat the current Car Cramming World Record in a new Fiat Grande Punto. The current record is 21 people in a Mini Cooper, but the Punto is being sold on its roomy interior, so the team are hoping to squeeze in 22! The regulations are strict – everybody must be at least five foot tall, and you must be able to start the engine. Eighteen-stone Tom Ford presents, and will be person number 22!

Finally, Jon Bentley looks at the billion-pound problem of “misfuelling”. One in seven of us have put the wrong fuel in our cars on the forecourt, and despite the stereotypes, men are far more likely to get mixed up than women. We find out exactly what happens if you put diesel into a petrol engine or petrol into a diesel engine. How much will these errors cost you? Jon offers some essential advice and recommends far cheaper remedies.
Jon Bentley, just quit.... please

Looking forward for the Tiff and DBR9 review
