BMW sets 9 World Records with Hydrogen car
Nine international records with BMW Hydrogen combustion engine, officially confirmed by FIA
Munich: The Federadtion Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has confirmed the nine(9) international records set by the BMW H2R for Hydrogen powered vehicles with a reciprocating engine. The nine records were set on September 19th at the BMW testing centere in Miramas (South France).
"The confirmation of our nine international records by the FIA provides impressive evidence of the performance capacity of BMW hydrogen technology. BMW has wrotten Automobile history." says Prof. Dr. Burkhard Goschel, Member of the Board for Development and Purchasing, BMW AG.
Here are the detailed records achieved by the BMW H2R arranged according to distance, time and average speed:
time speed(kmh)
-1 kilometere with flying start 11.993 300.175
-1 mile w/ flying start 19.9985 289.704
-1/8 mile, standing start 9.937 72.880
-1/4 mile, standing start 14.967 96.774
-1/2 mile, standing start 17.342 103.794
-1 mile standing 36.850 157.222
-10 mile standing 221.773 261.242
-1 kilometere standing 26.749 134.582
-10 kilometere standing 146.409 245.887
This monovalent record vehicle benefits from the technologies of the serial development. In the following years, BMW will make a 7 series available to customers which can be operated both on hydrogen and petrol. This is an important step towards the introduction of hydrogen to everyday motoring.

yeah. notice the 300km/h record? Mercedes may have been first with the hydrogen cell, but BMW is first with the records take that Merc fans

yeah, hydrogen is looking to be the most likely source to replace regular fuel.
Many companies are researching into it, but looks like BMW are at the head of the game at the moment.

at this point i really don't know. this is really only the second release they've had about the car that i've seen. the first one was just a statement that they reached the 300 kmh mark with the car.
if i come across any video i will try and post it here.

Well it "just" burns hydrogen instead of petrol so i'm sure it'll make a noise similar to a regular petrol engine but not really sure on the specifics

have u guys seen pics of this car? it's huuuge. the thing has to be longer than a maybach (obviously cuz it has to fit a big tank for the h2 in it).
nonetheless, it's pretty fast, but prolly won't be seeing it on the street anytime soon. glad they could make it work though.

that's some damn good performance from an alternative fuel car. i'm looking forward to BMW leading the way with hydrogen powered performance cars

come to think of it, i have seen a pic of this thing and yes, it is a monstrosity.
there is much more R&D to be done before it finds its way to the 'Ring but i would say it's off to a fantastic start

hydrogen cars are awesome, unfortuantely the process to extract they hydrogen is a very polluting affair =)
but kudos on bmw for showing that the hydrogen cars have great potential in performance cars as well

well, for now the process is polluting, but i am sure after much more research they will find a much more eco-friendly way of getting it.
as for the performance..think you could get a hydrogen engine for the Miata?

^^-- I agree, I think hydrogen is a much better way to go. Only real hurdles they have to get over is storage (gas tanks and gas stations) and finding a more efficient way of producing it (using electricity produced by coal burning plants will only increase pollution more...).
I've read about experimental procedures using algae that gives off hydrogen and the like, so if they were to refine processes like that, it would be a very Green gas
