Default 5th Gear - S10 EP7 - 6th November, 2006 - Discussion

The rally-bred Subaru Impreza has a reputation for being able to cover the ground with alarming ease. But not easily enough for one specialist importer who have developed their own particular version, the ?40,000 Litchfield Type 25. Jason Plato gets behind the wheel to deliver a definitive verdict on the fastest ‘Scooby’ ever.

Top golfer Ian Poulter likes performance cars and has the collection to prove it. Now he’s added another to his bulging garage – a true blue supercar in the shape of the Ford GT. He wants to drive it fast but doesn’t want to wreck it, so best mate Tim Lovejoy rustles up a press car for him to have some fun in – but after a few laps in the passenger seat Tim begins to regret his decision.

Also this week, Tom Ford drives the new 335i, BMW’s first turbo charged petrol car for 20 years. It’s got 306 bhp and is meant to be as fast as BMW’s current performance legend, the M3. At ?33,000 it also undercuts the M car by ?9,000 – does this make it the best car in the world?

Jon Bentley takes a close look at speed bumps, the bane of the everyday motorist – constantly jarring our teeth and ruining our suspension. But do some cars cope with them better than others? Jon suffers for the cause with a ten-year-old saloon, a modern family hatchback and top of the range 4x4 – and comes to a surprising conclusion.

Finally, Tiff Needell travels to Bolivia to drive the Ferrari 599GTB. His mission is to pilot the supercar for two days over some of the highest, roughest and most dangerous roads in the world as part of Ferrari’s 20,000 mile Pan American challenge. Will the car survive the altitude and dust, or will Tiff’s declining relationship with the expedition chief mean he’s not even allowed to find out?

so many "teach this person how to drive" segments. Fifth gear should rechange their name to "Teaching posers how to ruin supercars"

other than that, business as usual.
