ZR1 happens to the GT-R: GT-R production stopped
 

Except behind velvet ropes or on a turntable. I have never even seen a ZR1 or a GT-R.

Transmission reliability problems maybe?

Carsumer Advocacy? Nissan refuses to replace GT-R owner's busted transmission
A member of the North American GT-R Owner's Club forums started a thread recently in which he tells about dropping off his Nissan GT-R at the dealership when he began hearing loud noises coming from the rear of the car. The dealership told him that his transmission was toast as a direct result of him turning off the car's VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) too much, which you have to do in order to use the Launch Control function. The cost to repair the tranny is $20,000 and Nissan won't cover it under warranty since the GT-R owners manual states that damage to the transmission is not covered if it is proven to be the result of using Launch Control with the VDC turned off. In fact, the manual states that the only reason you should turn off VDC is for when you're rocking the vehicle because it's stuck in mud or snow. That's kind of like Nissan saying you should never use the Launch Control function despite the fact it's there.

^^ This is what we have been saying would happen from day 1 - but we were shouted down... now it turs out that "We the people" were 100% spot on ;)

supply can't outstay demand; so halting production artificially increases demand.

More realistically; I'd guess its because they are selling cars that customers are returning with broken transmissions with some obtuse frequency. Buying a 80-90k car is one thing; spending 20k on fixing the transmission because a "car on jack stands for a year" situation. I'd guess they are working on making it more robust. But what do I know.

They did (If my guess is correct) Which is why they told salesmen to tell buyers not to turn off VDC, or use hard launches for fear of breaking warranty. I suspect that there may be more issues with longevity of the transmission regardless of not turning off VDC... Again, this is purely speculation

They spent all their 1,0000's of laps R&D time chasing that Nurburgring time.... forgetting that R&D means Research & Development, not Race-time and Data-aquisition ;)
