5th Gear : S9 EP1 : 10th April, 2006 - Discussion

Kicking off the new series tonight, our resident playboy racing driver Jason helps a jackpot lottery winner choose a supercar. After scooping the top prize a couple of years ago, this motor mechanic is now ready to realise his ultimate dream. But should he buy a Porsche, a Bentley, an Aston Martin or a Lamborghini? After Jason shows him £5 millionworth of cars, the choice is narrowed down to two, an Aston Martin, and a Ferrari. After a back-to-back test drive, which one will he choose? It’s a unique insight into the purchasing process when money is no object.

Elsewhere, Tiff takes the new Jaguar XK to some of the best driving roads in the world, in sundrenched South Africa. It’s the first TV report on the car of the moment. Tiff delivers the definitive verdict on this awesomely stylish coupé.

Meanwhile,Tom sends us a video diary from the Geneva Motorshow. Highlights include an abundance of leggy promo girls, spectacular new cars, an amusing industrial epsionage incident with a Chinese woman spying on rival manufacturers, and a question-and-answer session with FormulaOne driver Jenson Button. Tom and Jenson evenend up cuddling!

Vicki is at the Anglesey circuit doing what she does best: racing. She pits two Subarus head to head – the rally-bred Impreza, and farmer’s favourite the Forester. Surely the estate car can’t win… can it?

And if buying a new car just seems too expensive, then don’t panic. Jon, the much-loved consumer champion of the team, goes undercover to test a revolutionary new type of ‘pay as you go’ car hire scheme. You book on the internet, use a swipe card to start the engine, and press a button on the dashboard to speak to the control centre – but does this new fangled hi-tech system actually work?
Looks interesting, but why is Jon Bentley still on? he still does the same old boring stuff.

I'm hoping he's on the end of the show, like last season, so there's nothing after it which I need to scan to.

Cool !! They come back

The XK feature sounds good, the rest is just more of the old stuff.

IMO I rather prefer them testing or comparing supercars then to follow some dude who doesn't know shit about cars fuck around with them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the new season is here, and I will watch and enjoy every episode of Fith Gear. But commoon guys, all the car TV shows are improving. Just look at the Germans lately!

twboy1999 04-09-2006 04:13 PM

finally a european car show is back

but i am sure the quality of 5th gear will remain the same as before

dutchmasterflex 04-09-2006 04:29 PM

wooP! New 5th Gear already!?!? man time flies..

can't wait to see the homepage get covered with * Gear episodes again.

It's that time of year again guys!

This is not a good thing when finals are coming up, but oh well. Jon Bentley reminds me of frankenstein but boring, and everything else is just fine and perfectly entertaining and in english, so i have no complaints.

No.1 04-10-2006 07:02 PM

Watched it already :P

It wasn't fantastic, but an improvement.

The lottery guy was interesting to watch, but i'm sure many of us will be frustrated with the lame-ass cars he's bought so far  Oh well, if cars ain't your thing....

The Jag feature was alright, but Tiff wasn't as enthusiastic as the rest of the british press - judging the car against the 991 or Bee-Em 645 instead of the Merc SL500 etc...

It was nice to see the new MX5 versus the old-old-model. Some poor woman had her car ragged silly by VBH on the angelsey track as they compared old for new. However, i disagree with VBH saying that the "infamous" shootout is just that - it really isn', and detailled analysis of each car's merits/performance isn't given - apeing TG really isn't cool, unfortunately.

Tom's geneva motorshow coverage was poor - he used a handycam (or so most of it seemed), but there are more clips to come from this trip later in the series.

The car-sharing was a topical issue, but of little relevance to non-UKers IMO. Poor Jon Bentley - lumped with the boring features again

As my expectations for this season weren't high (remember, this is the second season of 45min shows, and last season wa pretty dire) i was pleasantly suprised. Though i am on holiday at the moment, so anything on the TV is a welcome distraction from sitting on my arse revising :P

IMO only one word to sum it up "dull"...anyway I just got back from work, hence the delay in uploading the first feature (will be up in the next 15 mins or so)

Jabba 04-10-2006 07:37 PM

Its worrying as well as usually the first episodes are the best :|

Not a good start I'd say.......... :? :bah:

maybe they're just saving up the money so they don't run out by the end of the season

DeMoN 04-10-2006 08:31 PM

^ its Top Gear the big spenders, not these doods.
