To achieve this speed, they had to remove rear view mirrors and put a special aerodynamic kit. None of this was made with the McLaren

great job on the record, imagine what they could do if they had proper aerodynamics all the way around the car with all of that super hp. Nice article as well

The rev limiter may have been rasied...but what gave you the idea they removed the mirrors?

young man, why dun u go and read up the facts b4 u shoot?

Facts:
Mirrors REMOVED!
Limiters RAISED!

anyway, watz the big deal abt top speed?? do u have the balls / guts to do it often enuff on the public roads? or is it mainly for bragging rights and for the youngs to worship?

yeah, it's insane ...But on the other hand it's not that surprising - it is still a 911 and the 911 hasn't been intended for speeds like that.

Old man, take a LOOK right here:

This picture was taken of the car at 240mph...

Now tell me again it has the mirrors removed.

The whole article: McLaren F1 Speed Record

Topspeed...its just another way to measure cars, even if its not that easily applied to real-world situations, but so what...

^Awesome pic.

Nice place to do the testing too - a straightaway. Get the 9ff there, and it should post an even faster time. (The banking robs speed - even a test track as large as Nardo. At nardo, the speed where the centrifugal forces balance with gravity [when you can theoretically drive with no hands on the wheel, and you won't crash into anything] is about 150 mph - anything above that and you start having extra friction.)
XP3 mclaren did 233mph at nardo
XP5 (above) did 240mph.

yeah Ehra-Lessien is a money place to do high speed tests. Not only the lack of centrifugal force to rob speed, but also the tires don't overheat from the lateral road-holding requirements.

btw sentra_dude, thanks for posting about the article from the original McLaren test... I didn't know it was on JW, and was desperately wanting it

The 9ff could probably exceed 245mph there...but I still think it isn't breaking the F1's record, because it is no where near stock. Yes its a "road car", but a number of street legal & modified cars have gone (much) faster than the McLaren's 240.1mph. So why should the 9ff be considered special if other cars in the exact same category (street legal and modified) have gone much faster?

I'm not trying to take anything away from their achievement, its great, but I still don't understand the fuss.

Btw, the VW test track has 9km long straights... Even being that long, its amazing to watch the movie of the F1 there, and how quickly the McLaren accelerates to 370ish km/h and then just eats up that 9km! 8)
