Affiliations in the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war have been pretty clearly defined for nearly two years now -- despite a hybrid player here and some international releases there, most of the players involved have not switched support since the early days. Well that's all about to change, as Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Animation -- which started off HD DVD only before deciding to go both ways -- have officially announced plans to release movies exclusively on HD DVD, dropping Blu-ray support entirely. This means that hits like Transformers, Shrek the Third and Blades of Glory won't follow Mission: Impossible III as cross-format releases when they debut this holiday season. Paramount has released about 30 movies on Blu-ray so far, but those days have come to an end: apparently cheaper HD players trump a 2:1 sales advantage. We can't wait to see how the Blu-ray camp responds to this.

Yeah suppose to be:

$50 million for Paramount
$100 million for Dreamworks
$50 million for Universal

on the other side:

$50 million for Disney
$20 million for Fox

* * *

What I can't understand is why Dreamworks gets $100 million. Yeah, they got some great movies, but they are no where near the force of Warners, Universal, or Paramount.

So it seems like it will be a Title by Title bases by with Close Encounters coming to Blu-Ray first. . .

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh..._Uncertain/878

Levy went on emphasize that beyond 'Close Encounters,' Spielberg has no other films in the high-def pipeline on either format. "At this moment, there are no plans for something further [on either format]. Anything in the future will be decided on a title-by-title basis. There certainly won't be more titles in 2007."

This can't end well for consumers... we may end up stuck with a proprietary non-upgradable crap rammed down our throats.
