Audi R8 V12 TDI Study heading to the Detroit Show
Embargoes are like rules, they are meant to be broken. This time around Auto Motor und Sport in Germany have sent out their January issue to subscribers featuring a rendering of an Audi R8 Concept with V12 TDI engine article. The story is still under wraps by Audi until January 13 when it will make its world wide debut at the 2008 NAIAS in Detroit.
AMS calls the Audi R8 V12 TDI a study model, but depending on feedback the car might just make it to mass production (hand built mass production that is). The V12 TDI engine has made quite a name for itself on the track in the R10 race car and will be featured in the upcoming Q7 V12 TDI. It is a proven engine and will obviously not burn your R8 to a crisp.
Some numbers from the article. The Audi R8 V12 TDI produces 500 hp with 1,000 Nm of torque, 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, top speed lies over 300 km/h and fuel consumption is rated at 10 liters per 100 km. Disadvantage of the V12 TDI over the V8 is that the little trunk space is entirely gone due to the V12 size and it weighs 100 kg more too.
The front fascia is altered on the R8 V12 TDI because the engine requires more cooling, which is achieved through the larger airducts.

This is excellent news for Audi! Hopefully this goes into production!

Just saw this..looks nice to have a torque monster R8..but 4.2 isnt that good from a 1.000Nm v12..

Not surprised to see this at all....Finally an engine worthy of the R8 name as it is a celebration of the Racing R8's....Not really feeling the body kit however....Cant wait to see the numbers...

Hmmm. 500hp supercar with no trunk and a diesel engine that does 23 mpg...
But it does have 738 lb ft of torque...
But it's not that much faster than the normal R8, is it? (of course!)
...I'm split on this.
I know. Stick a R10 badge on it, and I'll get it!

I like it..Yes..but I'm not sure how to take it.
Like HeilSvenska said.........no trunk....23mpg......because of the beefier engine it will need beefier compenents so it will be heavier. Its already 220lbs heavier just due to the engine.
I dont think this will be worth the premium. Not at all.

why a diesel engine in this price segment, makes no sense other than as a study, who would buy this car ... a biturbo V10 would make much more sense as the next step for R8

It's not pretty, but it still looks great. I suppose this could give us a hint on what the RS version might look like. ...maybe without that big wing and the Avus-inspired glass roof with that big honking NACA duct on it, which is a nice touch.

Looks pretty good, a little contrived as far as the rear wing and the small portholes that line the edges of the grilles in the front airdam, but otherwise significantly more aggressive and purposeful than the standard car and the V12 looks good in that engine bay...espeically with the carbon brace...probably kills rear visibility though...

I like the looks very much. It 's more agressive than a standart R8 which is also very nice. I just fear that the V12 won't sound "good"
