04 Grand Prix GT2

What engine mods could I do to an 04 grand prix gt2 (w/o supercharger) to help acceleration that would be under $500. Do you guys think exhaust would be the first step or intake or what? Thanks.

It is the same engine as the previous grand prix with some minor tweaks.(derivative of the 3800 series II that gm has been using for 30 years). I use to own a 97 grand prix. Try http://www.clubgp.com/ for a forum(good I use to be a member).

I would go with a different super charger pulley to start with. Also get a cai. The exhaust is decent and expensive to upgrade.'

Alright, I put in a K&N air filter and it seems snappier. It's just a replacement filter though, and not a true CAI or FWI so maybe it's just my imagination. Is it worth it to put in a 160 thermostat instead of stock? (I think stock is 180, but I don't really know) These engines are supposed to be bullet-proof anyways, right? What benefit is there really of putting in a lower thermostat? I hear alot of people talk about doing it though. Thanks.

Lower temp thermostat makes the engine run cooler decreasing heat. This can cause the engine to last longer. It would be my opinion that you don't need it until youve modified alot more then what you have. Also please note if you go too low a temperature the car will not perform as well because the fans will always be on and the engine won't get hot enough(worse for emissions).

the grand prix gt/grand am gt motor is decent, and has good longetivity; however, i must utter my annoyance w/GM in designing any lesser model. it seems they designed to fail shortly after the warentee is up on the powertrain. the main problem ive been hearing about is blown heads.
just to be on the safe side, id recomend using some super slippy mobil 1 10w-40 even if you live in a winter state as i do. the synthetic blend is good to temps below -40 F, -40 C (yep, same temp)

You must account for the fact that they don't really deal that much with the market below the 3800.

They have more then a few proven bullet proof engines: northstar, ls1 variations, 3800 series 2...

im sorry, i had a typo..... what i meant to say isn't any lesser model, but rather the lesser model...... eg grand prix SE...... terrible in reliability.... terrible. and yes, the northstar v8's are incredible!!!! and i have extreme respect for the ls1, ls6, and new ls6 gen 2 engines. have you ever lifted the cylinder heads from the ls6? although its 2 valvs per; they are absoulutly HUGE!!!

The grand prix se is no longer in existance.. Some of them came with 3800 series 2. I had one.

mine is a 3800 series 3, not sure what the difference between series exactly is though.

There are minor differences in the seres. They just use better parts with the same design.
