^About two hours to go.

Yes. Good luck to him. Or... hopefully it's been a good 64 years for him.

Kittinger obviously had some of the biggest balls of the 20th century; I am just particularly keen to see the effects of breaking the sound barrier on the human body - and don't have basis for comparison as it has not happened yet.
Btw, to my knowledge the speed of sound is 770mph (1235km/h)
The speed of sound is not a constant. It varies depending on the density of the medium through which it is propagating. At Sea Level, the speed of sound is 343m/s which is something like 770mph, but the speed of sound at high altitude is much lower, at 60,000 feet it's about 660mph. Whereas in some denser medium like fresh water it is around 3315mph.

Just a quick edit.. What about his parachute.. whats it made out of.. would it hold together at those speeds?
Are you talking about the special theory of relativity when you talk about aircraft length, or are you talking about heat expansion??

I agree with you Vanquish, that water facilitates as a higher-speed medium. Allow me to ask you a question while we're on the subject? I thought that the atmospheric-variable is temperature, not density, and that the rule of thumb was that "the higher you go, the faster you get". Or is this the difference between atmospheric, and stratospheric pressures?
As soon as you start talking sound-wave-direction i'm gone.

Attempt failed. Didn't even leave the ground.

Here's another article. His balloon detached and floated away before it was fully inflated.
