Ferrari's all new V8 hits the track:



Circuit: Fiorano track (2.976 km – short course 1.413 km)
Driver: Marc Gene
Car: F2004
Weather: air temperature 20/29 °C, track temperature 26/51 °C; sunny.

First day of testing this week for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, working today at the Fiorano circuit.

Marc Gene took to the track at the wheel of an F2004, to carry out an engine testing programme aimed at next season. The Spanish test driver completed 38 laps (8 of them on the short version of the track,) with a best time of 59’’966.

The Scuderia continues testing tomorrow at Fiorano, again with Gene.

3 and a half second is quite a bit on a small course like Fiorano. But of course, we wouldn't know if Ferrari is pushing it hard or not. If V8 really pushes out 850hp, the lap shouldn't be that slow IMO.

/\/\/\Its the first run. Im sure they wouldnt push the motor because its bad press to blow up on a first test. Plus its still in development, its a new chassis or a new rear end since its has to house the V8...

If these are the first showings of the engines then i wouldn't be surprised if these were just sunday drives to get initial telemetry on the internals under a load. just wait for winter testing

The time was quite good considering that this was the first run and the chassis used wasn't totally adapted to the engine. But what's better is the lack of technical problems.

Definitely sound different......but at least unlike the one on the bench, it doesn't sound like a drill.

Gene posted a 59.305s @ Fiorano today, so it's getting there ...woohoo

'Quick Nick' to BAR?



Speculation is rife that Nick Heidfeld, a revelation of 2005, will soon set a course for Brackley to sign a provisional 2006 contract for BAR. Williams' current star, easily a match - if not Grove team leader - for highly rated teammate Mark Webber, will reportedly switch to take the seat alongside the also-unconfirmed Rubens Barrichello, despite equally strong gossip of a BMW-Sauber move.

Williams-contracted Jenson Button's move, although he doesn't want to go, makes room, to the detriment of '05 BAR teammate, Japan's Takuma Sato.

The little German's switch, though - like Button - could be scuppered by Sir Frank Williams, who is believed to own a watertight 'option' on Heidfeld's service for next year.

'Quick Nick', however, can probably rest easy. It appears that disappointing Renault driver Giancarlo Fisichella is en route to Grove, in a swap that could see Webber fill his blue boots.

Williams' Heidfeld option reportedly runs out next month.

I'm looking forward to this. A good strong relationship with Cosworth in terms of R+D pays dividends for Williams, especially with Cosworth's V8 heritage.

In my opinion it may be a good idea for Jenson to just forget the legal headache that in my opinion is never going to resolve unless BAR come in with big money, risk it and drive for Frank. Its a brill line up for Williams even if last year's chassis is going to put them on the back step.

But saying that nothing is ever for certain, Cosworth have been blagging a lot recently about the V8 but what level will the big-investment manufacturers be at e.g Honda?

I sure hope it pays off for Rubens to make that switch, he's a great driver and will surely shine as BAR's #1 guy next season (even if Button stays).

It does suck for Sato, though he hasn't exactly "wow"d anybody this year. Hell, I rarely even hear his name during the races

Honda are obviously going to help Sato, but I think Honda will be more interested in success than national pride at the moment after a bit of a crap year for both them and Sato. No disrespect to Sato's talents but no he hasn't shined at all this season, even if he has been ill for a bit.
