Yes but mac was always a clone of something. Xerox park was the group that invented the gui interface, mouse, ect..

THAT's why sales are low. Sale have been low since the beginning - prices have been high since the beginning. Apple not allowing cloned hardware killed it. No volume sales - no volume prices, no volume market.

This was the land scape in 1990 - that is the landscape in 2005.

That is about the dumbest piece of trash an anti-microsoft periodical ever published.

They are so far in a distant 2nd to PC's it is a joke.

Now they claim people are buying Macs just because they own iPods?

What a load of crap. The Mac is an expensive novelty at best. Offers no redeemable commercial value at the work place and even less in the home.

But - I am sure it looks good to the dumbed down AOL crowd.

Partly I have to agree with you but not everyone's like that. You could say the same thing about ACER's Ferrari laptop or Sony's VAIOs which also caters to the "has to have the cool new phone"
Not really...those products don't market themselves as things that "look good"

I have a Vaio, because it has the best screen i've ever seen on a lapton (X-black LCD) and because it's an awesome performer. Mac commercials however...always some trendy chick dancing with her ipod, or a hip designer with his iBook that fits in nicely with his iLife in his iApartment

The article says apple is in 4th PLACE. 4th...that meant there's 3 PC manufacturers ahead. Just because sales went up doesn't mean they're high...they're just up

Quote:

Well - Apple just did this - they weren't always a Unix clone.

So why cant Microsoft do that? Apple made the transition from OS9 to OS X because it'll be the long-term OS for the next two decades.
Well microsoft is doing that...but they already have a functioning kernel in place...no need to take someone elses

It's just a $100-200 premium. And that premium could be attributed to bundled software. I went canvassing for the cheapest DOS/Linux laptop this week and found that the cheapest ones off the shelf (Dell ditched us for some odd reason) equates to $700. Factor in the Windows XP Pro license and it is already touching the cheapest Apple laptop. OK I also found a $900 HP laptop (cheapest one with a license). It is a huge leap to say only rich people can afford Apple computers when the difference is just $100.
The cheapest apple notebook is $1000 (considerably more everywhere in europe except the UK), and thats an entry level iBook with a 12" screen. It's a 1.3ghz with a 40 gb drive. For that price you can get a pc notebook that is a 64 bit 1.6ghz, with an 80gb drive and a 14" screen.

It does matter. Would Microsoft make Windows if GUI-based OS werent popular?
Why make them if people don't want them?

It made Porsche copycats.
Yeah either that or successfull businessmen

Having a lot of crappy apps is far worse than having far fewer quality apps.
I'd like to choose what apps i can and can't have, not have Apple choose for me. You can spout "Quality over Quantity" all you want, but the fact is that developers make stuff for PC's because that's how they feed their kids. There are more programs available for PC, hence a wider selection, hence more competition in the market place, hence better prices

An OS that allows malware/etc easy entry/installation onto the OS is a weakness of the OS.
OSX also invariably has weaknesses, but it is not popular enough for attention seekers to exploit them.

100-200$ premium for aesthetics
Why pay that premium when you can spend it on making your PC even better?

Apple=ghey!

Apple is shite for yuppi late drinker posers, aka Vette Convertible drivers and Footballers in Ferraris.

Apple was good few years back when photoshop and some other editing programs were not availible for PC.

Whats all this talk about security? I have three firewalls running and I never get any issues, only reinstall because of good all wear of constant driver updates and program installs.

If you want security go PC and Linux.

All audio editing software is now availible for PC. I have Cakewalk installed right now.

Mac doesnt have 1/4 of the software that is availible for PC.

If your a PC enthusiast Mac is that last thing on your my mind.

Can you do this with a mac?

BTW Mac prices will never be as low as PCs.

You can build an internet machine/office machine for this much.

Some Asrock all onboard mobo: 65$
Celeron Celeron 2.4 : 77$
80gb HDD : 55$
512 PC3200 : 48$
Case w/PSU : 45$
Total :287$

287 Beat that.

Nothing - if you are a poser more into form than function - if you are more flash than photo - and of course my personal favourite:

No what you are on about is "hip style" - "trendy shit" - "latest fad".

I know about design

I have 10's of books and enjoy reading about the likes of classics such the Frank Lloyd Wrights', the Andy Warhols' among others.

Some slick "industrial designer" that pens the latest Stabilo Boss pen, or even the Dyson Vacuum cleaner or the pages of bunk in the Ikea catalogue are aimed at wannabe's like yourself.

You are sucked into the "I must have to prove my hippness" factor - that's being a fashion slave... not demonstrating appreciation for design

Take the E60 M5 - hip crap : BMW 2002 - classic design

Wright was championing the Prairie style from his heart before the "hip and trendy" found him

But this about why Apple sucks..

There are more iPod users and Mac owners who "just had to have it - it looks cool" than actual users who need/want the functionality

How ever - as Alex so cleverly illustrated - Form following function is a Windows/Intel thing... something rthat hippie Jobs wouldn't know if it came crashing through his garage door in the form of permission to print money (as was the case when Apple was founded)

But, sadly, Apple thought it's "design" was more important than it's "function" and he missed that memo..

He lost the Clone Wars, the GUI Wars, the Web Wars, the Server Wars and eventually even lost the Video and Audio Wars..
