Robert Kubica surprised everyone (except those at BMW) when he ended Friday's first practice for the Hungarian GP in pole position.

The BMW driver clocked a 1:22.390 to beat Felipe Massa by 0.129s, while Kimi Raikkonen finished in third place ahead of the McLarens.

Report: New Spyker driver Sakon Yamamoto posted the first timed lap of the session, a 1:32.593, which he quickly reduced by 1.2 seconds. He continued lapping, shaving tenths of his time before his team-mate Adrian Sutil knocked him off his perch by going 1.1s quicker.

New Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Vettel was the next at the top of the timesheets, while Ralf Schumacher spun exiting Turn One. The Toyota driver came in too fast and put his car into a spin before continuing on his way. His team-mate Jarno Trulli went fastest before Ralf took the P1 slot off him.

The Toyota battle, though, came to an end when Lewis Hamilton made his way out on the track. The McLaren rookie immediate shot to the top of the timesheets, while Robert Kubica went third, slotting in between the two Toyotas. Kimi Raikkonen took fifth place ahead of Mark Webber, Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button.

At the halfway mark, neither Felipe Massa nor Fernando Alonso had set a time together with seven other drivers.

Ralf continued to improve his time, closing in on Hamilton before both drivers dropped one place when Alonso went fastest with a 1:23.600. Heidfeld climbed to fourth place while Massa joined the mix, slotting in behind the BMW driver. David Coulthard improved to seventh place, dropping Raikkonen out of the top eight.

Rubens Barrichello brought out the yellow flags with half-an-hour left on the clock. He spun at Turn One in much the same way that Ralf did earlier in the session. And like Ralf he managed to avoid damaging his car and is able to continue on his way.

Yamamoto, meanwhile, went 1.7 seconds quicker than his previous best time. However, Spyker's Japanese driver remained at the back of the pack behind his team-mate Sutil.

Mark Webber's session came to a premature end when he stopped at the pit exit with a suspected mechanical problem. The Aussie, though, was soon joined by Toro Rosso's Tonio Liuzzi who also stopped at the pit exit in the same fashion as Webber did. Not a great morning for Red Bull and it's junior team.

Hamilton took the P1 slot off his team-mate, some 0.3s ahead of Alonso. But it wasn't long though before Alonso was back in front of Hamilton, clocking a 1:23.030, while a fastest first sector for Raikkonen saw him leapfrog Ralf for third place. Massa also got ahead of the Toyota driver, while Barrichello made his way up into eighth place.

Massa improved to third place before setting the fastest first and second sector times and taking the top spot on the timesheets with a 1:22.519, half a second up on Alonso's best time.

Lap times tumbled in the last ten minutes with Heidfeld going second quickest only to be knocked down one position when Kubica went fastest with a 1:22.390. Raikkonen then climbed to third place behind Massa, while Alonso and Hamilton filed in behind him and ahead of Heidfeld. Rosberg and Jenson Button completed the top eight.

Fernando Alonso set the pace as a few rain drops interrupted Friday's second practice session for the Hungarian GP.

The Spaniard, who is chasing his fourth win of the season, posted a best time of 1:20.919, which saw him edge out Renault's Heikki Kovalainen and his own McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, however, had a few problems which saw him finish the session beached in a gravel trap.

Report: Takuma Sato was the first driver to set a time in Practice Two, clocking a 1:26.355 which was quickly beaten by Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, who in the space of two laps shaved 3.4 seconds off Sato's best.

The Finn's time at the top, though, was short-lived as Fernando Alonso shot to the top of the timesheets on his first timed lap. A 1:22.319 for the McLaren driver.

Sakon Yamamoto joined the list of those spinning at Turn One as his Spyker took him for a ride. The Japanese driver escaped without any damage and continued on his way.

Moments later Lewis Hamilton took the P1 slot off his team-mate and continued lapping, improving his time. However, he lost out to Kovalainen while Tonio Liuzzi took his Toro Rosso for a bit of a rally drive over the grass at the final corner. Adrian Sutil followed suit a few minutes later.

Kimi Raikkonen improved from 16th to third place while his team-mate Felipe Massa seemed to struggle, locking up on a few laps before returning to the pits for his mechanics to try to solve the problem.

Meanwhile Alonso was once again quickest, clocking a 1:20.919, while Kovalainen and Hamilton were both within half a second of the reigning World Champion. With half an hour to go Nico Rosberg was up in fourth place ahead of Nick Heidfeld, Raikkonen, Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella.

At the back of the field, Yamamoto was also two seconds off his team-mate Adrian Sutil's pace, while Sebastian Vettel, who is making his debut for Toro Rosso, was 20th, 2.8s off the pace. The German driver upped his pace to take 19th place off Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson and move to within 0.012s of his team-mate Tonio Liuzzi.

With 20 minutes to go the rain began falling and all the drivers barring three returned to their garages. It didn't last long, though and the drivers were soon back on track.

Vettel and Davidson improved their times but while Davidson moved up from 20th to 15th place, Vettel actually dropped one place to 20th.

There was a bit of late drama as first Lewis Hamilton spun into the gravel at Turn Eight, beaching his McLaren and then Massa spun at the final corner.

The session ended with Alonso fastest followed by Kovalainen and the beached Lewis Hamilton.

22 S. Yamamoto Spyker F1 1:24.062 24 laps

Felipe Massa was the man to beat in the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the Hungarian GP.

The Ferrari driver, who struggled a bit for pace on Friday, posted a 1:20.183 to beat reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso by 0.231s. Lewis Hamilton was third quickest, a further 0.047s back.

Report: Anthony Davidson and Adrian Sutil were the first out of the pits as all the drivers barring the Ferrari pairing came out to complete their installation laps.

Sakon Yamamoto, Adrian Sutil, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli each had their turn at the top of the timesheets before Kimi Raikkonen grabbed it 20 minutes into the session with a 1:21.257.

Raikkonen continued lapping taking vital tenths of his time. However, a flying Lewis Hamilton got the jump on the entire field with a 1:20.764, which put him in first place ahead of Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.

Halfway through the session the top eight is: Hamilton, Raikkonen, Alonso, Trulli, Felipe Massa, Ralf, Rosberg and Wurz.

A minor off at Turn Ten for Raikkonen sends him back to his Ferrari garage for a bit of a clean-up and some advice on how to close the gap to Hamilton, which is currently 0.098s.

After a short break for the front-runners, during which the two Super Aguris each had a turn in top eight and the Renaults tried to find some pace, Raikkonen heads back out onto the track.

The Finn is soon up on Hamilton through the three sectors. The Ferrari driver crosses the line with a 1:20.741, which puts him in P1 and 0.023s up on Hamilton.

Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg both have a small moment at the final corner and should be greatful the run-off area is asphalt and not gravel.

Alonso returns to the track and does a fastest first sector time before his team-mate beats it. The two McLarens are both on flying laps and Alonso takes P1 while Hamilton goes second, 0.162s slower than his team-mate. However, both drivers are dropped down the order by Massa, who posts a 1:20.183.

With ten minutes remaining the Toyotas of Ralf and Trulli are fighting for supremacy behind the Ferrari/McLaren battle, while Heidfeld and Kovalainen are seventh and eighth.

Davidson, though, makes his return to the top eight, taking seventh place off Heidfeld, before locking up at Turn One and going miles off the track onto the run-off area.

Ralf Schumacher was the first of the front-runners to put on the softer option tyres followed by Rosberg who improved his time to take fifth place ahead of Ralf. Mark Webber also makes his way into top eighth using the super soft Bridgestone rubber.

The battle, though, was still between the Ferraris and McLarens, with the latter the first to try the soft tyres.

Alonso is immediately on a charge, setting the fastest first sector time, which is beaten moments later by Hamilton as Heidfeld pops up into third place. Alonso stays second, while Hamilton takes third place back from Heidfeld and the checkered flag falls.
Qualifying:
1 Al0nso
2 Hamilton
3 Heidfeld
4 Raikkonen
...
14 Massa
I only watched Q3 so I'm not sure why Massa was only P14. But it's most likely reliability problems again... Full report to follow, it's very interesting especially between Al0nso and Hamilton...

Short report from Planet F1

Qualifying: Alonso cheats his team-mate to pole
Fernando Alonso beat Lewis Hamilton to pole position for the Hungarian GP after dubiously holding up his team-mate in the pits.

With Hamilton ahead of him on the timesheets, Alonso prepared for his final run at pole position.

But despite being cleared by his team to leave the pits, the reigning World Champion remained in the pitbox for a few extra seconds thus preventing Hamilton from putting on new tyres and getting across the start/finish line in time to do another flying lap of his own.

Alonso's actions meant he claimed pole position while his team-mate was unable to come back at him. Hamilton finished second on the grid.

Nick Heidfeld meanwhile beat Kimi Raikkonen to third place, while Felipe Massa qualified P14 after problems in the second segment.

O MY FUCKING GOD! I have a Schumacher in my McLaren team. Fucking Al0nso cheating bastard.

I hope Ron does the correct thing and orders the Pit boys to, purposely, retain Al0nso longer so that Lewis has shorter pit times. My god this Spanish prick. Yes, he is giving my team some valuable points, but I dont want Schumacher-cheating-style in my team.

Ron Dennis looked unbelieveably pissed after qualifying! That was a pretty brazen move by Alonso. I couldn't believe how well Hamilton conducted himself after Q3 and in the interview room- you could tell he was pissed, but he never lost his cool. Very professional. I hope he goes out tomorrow and gives Alonso a pants-down spanking on the racetrack.

Alonso sure isn't winning friends with his whining and dastardly tactics. Hopefully Hamilton will get his just rewards in the race tomorrow and Alonso gets nerfed by one of the other cars. :fist:

Actually, I think Hamilton is going to the inside of Alonso heading into Turn 1 and not going to yield even if it means crashing into him. Hope he pushes him out on the dirt on the exit.

The Ferraris look to be quite slow. I think Kimi can get Heidfeld but the McLarens look uncatchable.

If Fernando Alonso were so good, he wouldn't have to resort to dirty tricks. Shame on him. Should be an interesting race, although I think this will be McLaren's weekend.
