i've had poor experience with Maxtor myself. i was using one for a secondary drive up until last school year when it started to crash.

i've never had a problem with my Western Digital 80gb w/8mb cache, but every couple days it'll make a worrying clicking sound. that's been happening a couple years, though, and i've had the drive since 2001.

i think today i'll be picking up a Seagate 120gb drive at Best Buy, they're on sale for $50 after an instant rebate They seem to be quite reliable based on what i've read on other forums and on storagereview.com

Back in PC repair, and in the larger companies I've worked in, Maxtor's were on average the hdd's which died most often.

I personally won't be buying another Maxtor again... But your mileage may vary. Always have a second disk for backups.

Having a fan on your HD just keeps the heat down.. doesnt neccessarily turn your shitty HD into a better one

I've always known Maxtors to be problematic.. Didn't Seagate buy them out recently?

It's a good thing hard drives are dirt cheap.. but everyone should know to buy atleast 2 at a time for a back up.. You really never know when it comes to hard disks..

Yep, i actually just read that press release on Seagate's site last night. I think it said it will keep selling both brands in stores since Maxtor is such a big name in the retail market, but i'm sure technology upgrades will be applied to both brands.

ahh the maxtor drive. I haven't bought one for like 7 years after having 3 or 4 of em die on me. I still have one running, but it makes an annoying whistling noise. I've stuck with Seagate ever since, because the only WD drives I want are the raptors. But they're a little expensive for me to justify a much lower loading time for games and applications I rarely use.
