A race-spec version of the Gallardo shown at Frankfurt raises the prospect of a strpped-out baby Lambo for punters. Sources say engineers can't resist playing with the possibilities of a lightweight versioin, possibly rear wheel drive. But if the demand for the 4wd is as high as expected, they won't be able to build the lightweight before 2006.

I heard Lambo Gallardo will race in class N/GT against the Ferrari 360 and the 911 GT3, but it has to be converted to RWD because 4WD is not permitted. So I hope there will be a lightweight vesion of the Gallardo, and also of the Murcielago, without 4wd and Traction control and MORE bhp!

In Evo Italia some months ago there was an interview wtih Ing. Dallara, if I'm not wrong is the chief engineer of the Miura project. It was interestin to read how they get to the final vesion and how succes the car had, the first proper supercar, and was rated as the most sexy car by Evo Uk (it was the Lamborghini Miura SV)

"If Lamborghini decides to put this into production...the bar will be once
again raised! Ferrari has produced a number of compotent drop tops but, none
can provide the visual impact of the Gallardo!
Lamborghini...you've done it again!"

I agree 8)

27.11.2003 TOP TEAMS LOOKING TO RUN THE LAMBORGHINI MURCIELAGO RG-T NEXT YEAR

Interest in the new Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT racer is continuing to grow with crack French outfit DAMS and English FIA GT entrants Creation Autosportif both linked with running the 6.2-litre V12 sportscar next year.

The Murcielago R-GT, developed by Reiter Engineering in Germany, has had a difficult start to its racing career. Its debut was delayed until the final round of the FIA GT series at Monza and the car, suffering from a lack of straight line speed around the ultra-fast Italian circuit, was withdrawn after qualifying. A scheduled entry into the Le Mans 1000 kms earlier this month was withdrawn, but progress has been made in testing and Lamborghini are satisfied with the project's progress.

DAMS and Creation Autosportif are two teams in talks with Lamborghini over running the R-GT next year. Leading French teams DAMS are looking to use the Murcielago R-GT to spearhead their return to top line motor racing. They have a wealth of experience running sportscars and plan a two car entry into next year's FIA GT series, the second car expected to be run for a wealthy amateur pairing.

Meanwhile Creation Autosportif who ran two Lister Storms in this year's FIA GT series are keen to take part in the four race Le Mans Endurance Series next year and with the Lister ineligible, the R-GT is their favoured option.

Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT tests in Austria and is on show in Dubai

7 December 2003…/ Lamborghini undertook further testing of its Murciélago R-GT with a two-day outing at Salzburgring, Austria at the beginning of December with Dutchman Peter Kox behind the wheel.
“The car ran beautifully and it was great to have a chance to drive it,†said Kox. “It was an opportunity to test the aerodynamic performance of the car, as well as undertake a general check on the systems.â€
A further test session is planned in Italy before Christmas. In addition, the Murciélago R-GT will be on display at the Dubai Motor Show from 11 to 15 December 2003. Dubai will host the final round of the FIA GT Championship in 2004.
“We are extremely pleased with the car’s progress so far,†said Manfred Fitzgerald, Marketing Manager for Automobili Lamborghini. “We have a number of customers who wish to race the Murciélago R-GT in either FIA-GT or ACO-governed series, and we look forward to seeing the Murciélago R-GT competing next year.â€

Lamborghini, in conjunction with Reiter Engineering and using the expertise of Audi Sport, is developing the Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT over the winter months in order to deliver the first race cars to customers in 2004.

Corus Supplies World’s First Aluminium Tailor Welded Blank

Corus, the international metals group, has announced that it is supplying Audi’s new Lamborghini Gallardo with the world’s first production ready aluminium tailor welded blank designed to help the car maker further reduce vehicle body weight and assembly costs.

Corus, the international metals group, has announced that it is supplying Audi’s new Lamborghini Gallardo with the world’s first production ready aluminium tailor welded blank designed to help the car maker further reduce vehicle body weight and assembly costs. The tailor welded blank was introduced in this car in spring 2003 and Corus has now successfully supplied more than 1200 pieces.

Corus Aluminium Rolled Products (CARP) based at the Duffel plant in Belgium, is supplying Audi with the unique aluminium blank for use in the Lamborghini Gallardo’s front wheel arches. It follows years of research and development between the plant, the Corus Research and Development centre at IJmuiden in the Netherlands and Audi to bring to the automotive market a product that combines the weight advantages of aluminium with the recognised benefits of using tailor welded blank technology.

Steel tailor welded blanks are now an established automotive manufacturing technology already accounting, on a rising trend, for more than 15 per cent of the average vehicle body structure on high volume models. The new Corus aluminium tailor welded blank similarly joins by laser welding two or more sheets of different grades and thicknesses, which have been strategically selected to provide the optimum strength using the least amount of material possible for specific points on a vehicle.

Vehicle manufacturers are today increasingly turning to tailor welded blanks to help increase structural integrity while reducing vehicle component weight for lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Corus anticipates that within the next decade 25 to 30 per cent of all steel body-in-white car production will include tailor welded blank technology.

However unlike steel, aluminium is a more difficult material to weld, which historically has restricted the development of aluminium tailor welded blanks. In 2001 Corus invested in a laser welding centre in IJmuiden which has since helped it to study and optimise the aluminium laser welding techniques needed to develop a robust process with the consistently high quality weld seam required to move from prototypes for test and development into series production.

Commenting on developing the world’s first production ready aluminium tailor welded blank, Johan Ameel, director of Corus Aluminium Rolled Products said: “We have been co-operating with Audi for years in the development of improved aluminium qualities for vehicle bodies. Developing this further into offering tailor welded blanks in aluminium was a challenging but logical step.â€

Mr Ameel continued: “We are confident that Audi and other vehicle manufacturers will now maximise the full weight advantages of combining aluminium with tailor welded blank technology to help further reduce vehicle body and chassis component weight on future aluminium models or with specific automotive applications.â€

Corus aluminium tailor welded blank products will be made both from 5000 and 6000 series alloys, which offer strong forming capabilities making it suitable for vehicle body and chassis applications. Using a mono beam laser system allows perfect weld quality in both alloy groups.

In addition to the tailor welded blank, the company also supplies aluminium coil and sheet for all outer and inner panels for the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Within the market generally, Corus already supplies aluminium structural and body parts for many of the world’s leading carmakers including Audi, BMW, Daimler Chrysler, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Volvo. Earlier this year, the company invested €55 million (euro) in a continuous annealing and pre-treatment line at the Duffel plant, in response to the growing demand from vehicle manufacturers for aluminium for use in specific automotive applications. The main driver behind this continuous investment for the automotive industry is the environmental benefit of reducing vehicle weight and hence fuel consumption.

This major investment at Duffel follows last year’s €1.3m (euro) investment that allowed the plant to supply a new range of cut-to-length special blank products increasingly used for the manufacture of, for example, car bonnets.

Corus is an international metals group supplying steel and aluminium solutions for automotive, construction, engineering and packaging industries with manufacturing facilities and sales offices throughout the world.
