i wish i had ... but but i did not accounted for the big degree in changing light... and quite of the few cars driving around came as a suprise ops:

so where most of the images turned out great, a few turned out like this..
setting was perfect for taking an interior shot of a parked DB2 in the shade... and horrendous for this amazing sounding race car...
after adjusting the levels and contrast... its still no good

What about the automatic modes? Doesn't the 20D have a mode where shutter speed and aperture are set automatically? Or at least one of the two?

Use Tv Mode, set the shutter speed and the camera does the rest.
If the Aperture number is flashing in the viewfinder then you need to increase the ISO setting
