good goly!
its so rediculous, that it seems simply impossible... but the pictures!

something critical must have happened in the last few km's driven... the heat of the exhaust, and cylinder heads must have been huge before the fire broke out

personally that looks like it was an electrical fire look at the exhaust shield it looks fine and running at redline for that long would have made the exhaust glowing soo bright the car infront could have seen it in the mirror even the O2 sensor looks unharmed it seems only the plastic crap is melted. the kind of abuse taken in the described situation would have fucked alot more shit up. BUT if it is true this is why they use Automatics for rental cars in the US it's for their own safety.

Hhmm.. 220km in first gear? I some how doubt it. What is the speed in gears for that anemic piece of rubbish?
30kmh in 1st, 40kmh in 2nd 60kmh in 3rd?
I would have thought that the cops in europe enforce 50kmh minimum speed on the roads?

T-bird i agree with u, a normal exhaust (not titinum or stainless steel) would glow like the sun! normal exhaust heat is 95 - 100 C thats with out putting pressure on it.. driving 220 kph in first gear damn that would cause some gass leaking holes in the exhaust pipe..

Not 220km/h, but 220km! Imagine that poor C4, bouncing of the revlimiter for 4 hours straight!

Still using that old pirate vocabulary
220 km in the red zone, I'm also tempted to call this BS, he must have noticed it ...

well I highly doubt the fact that he couldnt shift up if he already got it into 1st...If he managed getting 1st then Im sure he could have managed getting 2nd, 3rd and 4th, but oh well....75% of cars here are autos afterall.

We got the 220km distance versus speed part... thepart we are saying is a ltitle hard to believe is that the person would have simply sat and taken 7 hours or so to cover the 220km in 1st gear at 30 km/h.....
Without either having some offer help, having a cop pull them over for going to slow... I mean - is there even a single stretch of road in Europe 220km long without any cops or traffic?
NOw - keeping the car in 2nd or 3rd as you run with traffic holding the rental car bouncing off the rev limiter to see how ong the engine will go before getting destroyed is another thing all together...
I cannot say I have never tried that before...
