I don't think they did it by taking photos. I think they filmed it and then took "snapshots" (stills) of the video. It would certainly be easier that way.

I think mihai is pretty close. If you watch the shadows of some of the outdoor scenes, you'll see they don't move much. If they were taking pics the shadows would have changed quite a bit.
