i have the same problem..... when i didnt use router , the speeds are not bad
after i used router.. it was the same situation u described....

you need to open up port 6891-6900 for msn file transfer behind router...
but is still kind of slow

Based on your e-mail, you want to know the ports that MSN Messenger uses for File Transfer because you are experiencing slowness when transferring files.

For file transfer, you must open ports 6891-6900. For example, port 6900 must be opened for both Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) connections.

In addition, here are other suggestions you can try to help you resolve your issue:

1. The bigger the file, the longer it takes to transfer. If you are transferring more than one file, wait first to finish the first file that you are
transferring before transferring another file.

2. There is excessive Internet traffic and technical/connectivity issue with your Internet Service Provider (ISP). I suggest that you try using MSN
Messenger during lower Internet traffic hours to see if issue persists.

3. Consult your Internet Service Provider for possible technical issues. You may ask your contact also to check with his/her ISP regarding this issue.

4. There are several running applications that are using up the system resources or bandwidth of your machine. I recommend that you:

a. Close other programs and Web applications running.
b. Close the conversation window, then sign out of MSN Messenger. Wait for several minutes, sign in and try to send files again.

5. Make sure you and your contact have at least 56 kilobits per second (kbps) of Internet connection speed to your Internet service provider (ISP).
This is the connection speed, not the modem speed. If you or your contact have a lower connection speed, you may need a faster modem.

6. There are spyware/adware and other deceptive software that conduct certain activities on your computer without notifying you and getting your
permission first. These activities may include displaying pop-up advertisements, changing Web browser settings, and collecting personal
information. There are a variety of tools that can detect and remove unwanted software from your computer. Please go

removal tools.

7. There are third-party add-in applications in your computer that causes the MSN Messenger application to suffer degraded performance and
varying degrees of unstable operation. In order to experience the best performance with MSN Messenger, you should uninstall third-party MSN
Messenger add-in applications you have installed. For instructions on how to uninstall the application, contact the third-party add-in vendor.

8. You have a third-party firewall application; it may be filtering out instant messages you are sending to your contacts. I recommend disabling or
configuring it properly for instant messaging. Contact the firewall vendor for assistance on how to disable or configure the application.

9. The Antivirus option on the File Transfer settings is enabled. The program is scanning the files you send or receive, that cause the delay. I suggest
that you disable this option on your MSN Messenger. To do this, please follow these steps:

a. Start MSN Messenger.
b. Go to the "Tools" menu, and click on "Options".
c. Under the "Messages" tab, and under the "File Transfer" heading, disable the "Scan files for viruses using:" checkbox.
d. Click OK.

Thing is depending what the file is, do you want to put in on somebody elses server?

Well, I'm now using trillian, I guess the transfers are still slow but I'll try (once again) to configure the router

Dingo, which ISP are you with? I am with IInet, and i have not had one successful msn transfer in the last 12 months. It must have something to with the router, and apparantly updating modem software. BTW i'm on 1500/256. Email me if you want to trials some things..

I'm with iiNet also, they are pretty good and I have to support the local Perth ISP Thanks for the offer, might get back to you and see how it goes
Did you know that they have just started releasing 8000/1000 plans.....that would be nice but very expensive

Yeah pretty cool huh? The pricing is pretty good i found, however i didn't want the phone package too.. Have you tried opening the appropriate ports to get your files flowing through msn properly?

I have got the iiphone package because it gives me $10 off my broadband every month ....and the call rates are not bad

Go into your toolbox setting in IInets page. Or, put this in your browser and look for port settings -----> 192.168.0.1

but the toolbox only allows me to block/open the following ports:

Port 25 (smtp), Port 80 (http) , Port 139 (netbeui/ipx) and Port 443

I think those ports are on the router, which I don't use
