Default .mkv or 720p files keep freezing/crashing VLC

Just got my Samsung LCD HDTV (yehey!) thus making me download HR HDTV and 720p video files (700-1100MB/episde). My problem now is that VLC keeps freezing/crashing whenever I try viewing them. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this problem?

Your computer? What's the video card and the processor you have there? It might just be you don't have enough horsepower. . .

VLC sometimes gives me problems too with x264-playback.
What I've discovered is that WMP plays those files without any problem whatsoever, using the CoreAVC-filter.

My PC:

P4-3.0GHz
2GB RAM
GeForce 7600GT

Nope, on Windows XP Pro SP2. So I have to use WMP + CCCP codec pack. *grumble* Would've wanted VLC to handle everything.

Yeah, it seems the MKV developers recommend that you use the CCCP as well.

Do any of your 720p mkv rips have a really low audio volume? The 2 Heroes rips I have are really quiet, making me boost up the volume on my mixer just to hear it at a regular volume.

I have exactly the same "problem" with my Heroes & Prison Break 720p episodes. Really don't know why the volume is so low...
