Default Flash

Just an idea at this stage, but I'm looking into buying one.

I don't know that much about them so could someone tell me a reason why I should go for a new "Canon Speedlite 580EX TTL Shoe Mount Flash" for around $700 rather than a 2nd hand "E-TTl Speedlite 380ex" for around $200?

Will I notice a major difference in quality or usability?

Thanks.

The 380EX is ok, but has 2 disadvantages:
- it can only swivel up, not sideways, so you can't bounce with the camera in portrait-mode
- it can't act as a slave when you decide to get a nother flash

And of course the guidenumber is lower (38m @ ISO100 vs. 58m @ ISO100). I'd get a new 430EX instead of the 580EX.

Yep just found that out after reading some reviews, the 380EX is out.

Why did you get a 580EX if you think the 430EX is more suitable/better?

The 430 is about $250 cheaper here, whats the reasoning - do you know?

The 580EX has the following over the 430EX
  • more Flash power - 58 meters vs 43 meters (ISO 100)
  • Variable stroboscopic flash operation
  • External power options
  • Sophisticated manual control
  • Wireless controller for wireless flash operation and it can also act as a slave.
  • Ability to switch to TTL only on a film camera

If the above are requirements then go for the 580EX but I suspect the 430EX will be enough

Thanks!

I've decided to go with the 430EX and a couple of accessories.

Time to start learning.
