GLOBAL PREMIERE OF MAZDA MX-FLEXA CONCEPT AT GENEVA

Mazda continues to show a possible direction for future products at the Geneva Motor Show 2004 with the global premiere of the Mazda MX-Flexa concept and the European premiere of the new Mazda MX-Micro Sport concept car. These two concept cars are examples of how Mazda could expand its model line up to meet growing demand for striking design and versatility among UK buyers.

Sharing the stage with them at Geneva is a new hydrogen-fuel version of the award-winning RENESIS rotary engine and the Mazda3 saloon with the new 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Mazda MX-Flexa – Attractive, Flexible and Fun-to-Drive

Mazda Motor Corporation is using the Geneva Motor Show for the world debut of its newest concept vehicle, the Mazda MX-Flexa. The six-seat Mazda people carrier, the fifth concept vehicle presented in the past six months, demonstrates one possible direction Mazda could take for a future people carrier.

The Mazda MX-Flexa combines a graceful, well-proportioned and athletic exterior design, innovative packaging solutions that include people carrier levels of flexibility and ease-of-use. As with all Mazdas the MX-Flexa offers driving dynamics that create a vehicle with new levels of emotional appeal.

Mazda MX-Micro Sport – Strong and Sporty

Mazda’s new MX-Micro Sport concept offers a compact version of new-generation muscularity, combined with a roomy interior and a powerful 2.0-litre petrol engine. It represents Mazda’s latest effort to strengthen its line up with a strong and sporty vehicle based on the Mazda2 platform.

The MX-Flexa’s design is sculptured and sporty, like all new-generation Mazda vehicles, yet modern and sophisticated, and of course carried out with recognisable Mazda build quality to create a purposeful and sporty personality.

Despite its dynamic and compact design, Mazda’s new MX-Micro Sport has an interior that is spacious and comfortable with ample headroom and space for four adults, with a colour combination and design details combined to create a sense of quality and design sophistication.

The new Mazda MX-Micro Sport uses its compact dimensions to make driving the car a real joy. Superior driving dynamics provide good straight-line stability, progressive steering with sharp turn-in feel, and extremely linear brake response.

These attributes combine with a powerful 2.0-litre 148bhp (150ps) petrol engine, with maximum torque of 187Nm (138lb ft) at 4,500 rpm, to deliver a fantastic sub-compact that looks great, boasts excellent driving dynamics and can transport up to four people in comfort and style.

Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen Rotary Engine: For a Cleaner Environment

Mazda is presenting an alternative-fuel vehicle engine at the Geneva Motor Show that combines hydrogen fuel with the unique rotary engine technology of its award-winning RENESIS engine. Fun to drive and environmentally sound, the RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine is the ultimate demonstration of the flexibility of the unique rotary engine that retains high levels of rotary-engine fun, while realising extremely clean emissions through the use of hydrogen.

Mazda presents the RX-8 Hydrogen RE as a realistic alternative-fuel vehicle, and the concept engine can be powered by either petrol or hydrogen fuel. The engine requires few modifications to run on hydrogen fuel, which means it could be produced at a relatively low-cost. As such, it could help promote the usage of hydrogen fuel and the development of a supporting hydrogen-fuel infrastructure.

Mazda3 Diesel – Smooth Operator Joins the Line Up

Mazda shows the Mazda3 diesel, on sale in the UK from 1 March, at Geneva Motor Show 2004 alongside the saloon, also recently launched in Europe. The new 1.6-litre second-generation common-rail diesel engine joins the Mazda3 line-up to meet growing demand in the UK market for modern diesel engines. Priced from £13,350 on the road the Mazda3 diesel is available in both hatchback and saloon body styles.

The new diesel engine, named the MZ-CD (Mazda common-rail turbo diesel) is an all-aluminium, DOHC 16-valve power unit. It generates a maximum of 109ps (107bhp) at 4,000rpm, and delivers 240Nm (177lb ft) of torque at only 1,750rpm, with low fuel consumption, low emissions and operating refinement that is similar to the petrol version of the Mazda3.

The Mazda3 diesel is initially available in S and TS versions, with equipment levels identical to the petrol version launched in late January. TS2 and Sport versions will appear later in the year. Initially launched as a Euro III engine the range will see a Euro IV engine introduced late in 2004.
