update your codecs !

most avi files are either divx - www.divx.com or xvid - www.koepi.org
and they use mp3 audio - http://download.divxmovies.com/mp3codec.zip
or ac3 audio - http://download.divxmovies.com/ac3filter_0_70b.exe

if its wmv files that are broken update your windows media player to the newest version

^ i second that. While the player's skin looks ugly (not ugly, but functional), its a great program. If you see a screen shot of the program, you'd think is crap... truth is, it plays EVERYTTHING! If you have an IMAGE of a video, it'll play it. If you put in 3G videos, itll play it... its just to good.

I second that I however had one problem with VLC player recently... it didn't play the vid encoded with some weird codec... downloading a newer version solved that problem perfectly 8).

I suspect the problem has to do with your hardware rather than software. If you computer is so old it only supports UPPERCASE and doesn't support JavaScript to see the popup warning then it's probably too slow to play videos posted here.
