Default George Michael retires to the internet

"George Michael has gone through a few changes. In the early '80s it was "Choose Life" t-shirts and a squeaky clean image in the pop group Wham, by the late '80s it was the sexual bravado of Faith, by the '90s it was homosexuality in public restrooms and in the 21st century he'll soon be just pixels on a screen and music on your computer. Michael has announced his retirement from the music biz, claiming his soon-to-be released album, Patience will be his last...last available at stores that is.

Michael says that from now on he'll release songs on his Web site for free with an option to make a donation for downloading the tune. All proceeds will be given to charity. Michael goes on to state that he has more than enough money and has no need to get more from the public for any future songs.

Wow. While I've never been crazy about his music, that's got to be about the coolest thing I've ever heard of. A person who doesn't want any more money? That's got to be a first. That's retiring with class."

Wow. I really agree that George Michael's intentions are cool!

Yeah, he does seem to be a good person, just i dont like any of his music!
Mind u you wouldnt really be bothered about making any more money if you had as much as he does!! He just enjoys making music, like a lot of people. I enjoy playing my guitar, i have no aims to make any money out of it, sure that would be great, but i just enjoy playing, and if other people enjoy listening then thats even better!

Wow! He has just earned quite a bit of respect from me. I like
music, but I like it more when I know that the person who is playing
it likes what he is doing. Secondly and perhaps more importantly
it means that he sees that there is more to life than just making
money.

lets see how long he will do it and if anyone gonna join him.
I think that what he is doing is quite rare, people these days just
love money too much. But I do think that it will make the public
ask questions about weather or not the music they are buying is
over priced.

Offspring tried to do the same thing, but their record label quickly put an end to it.

Why do recording companies have so much controll over the
actions of there artists? And it would seem, if what I here is
correct, that they treat the artists like trash, sucking as much
money as they can out of the deal, leaving very little for the
actual person who is making the money in the first place. I
say if an artist wants to give their music away for free that
should be their choice to make, I mean, they are the ones that
hold the copyrights to the songs, dont they.

Of course he would do this. I mean, how many people are gonna go out and buy it anyway?

I enjoy his older stuff. He's an "Okay" artist in my book.

Cause bands have to sign a contract

hold the copyrights to the songs, dont they.
Partially yes, but the record label has some ownership as well. Look at the Beatles and Micheal Jackson thing. Micheal Jackson owns the right to the Beatles music. Granted, The Beatles were partially responsible (should have read their contract) But it goes to show, just because you created it, doens't mean you own it.

But, I appluad George Micheal, he is taking a very bold step. I for one would like to see the music industry as it is die. I want new music, not the same shit re-packaged.

That is surprising I wouldn't expect anybody to say that. Some people make it to the top and don't stop but not him

Hmmm, I didn't know that, I had always just thought
that they could use their songs in any way they wanted,
legal stuff is complicated and getting more complicated.
In that case I think it would be a better idea to start up
your own record label , but perhaps that's a little too
complicated and expensive for an artist to do.

artists and mucitians are just like employees, they listen to the boss. If they own that record company, then they can do anything they want

He's a billionaire? If this is true does any one
know exactly how much he has. I have seen several
list of richest celebs, richest people under 40, etc, but
I have never seen his name on any of those lists.

Last time I checked, he had somewhere around $1 billion. I mean the guy used to get $50.000 cheques when he was 10. 8)
