Default EVO #102

Planet evo
You wait ten years for a new Japanese supercar and then three turn up at once. There’s a new NSX (Hurrah!), a hybrid-powered Supra (a quiet, green sort of Hurrah! that doesn’t let out too much CO2) and the V10-engined Lexus LF-A

Driven
Aston V8 Prodrive Vantage, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Weltmeister Trophy Exige, Impreza STI Spec C Type RA-R, Fiat Bravo 1.9 MultiJet, BMW 335i Convertible, Toniq-R Duratec, Vauxhall Vectra VXR, Morego BBR Focus ST280

Alfa 8C Competizione
The 8C is arguably the sexiest car to come out of Italy this century – and we’re granted an exclusive audience with the production-ready Alfa, which will reach the first of 500 lucky buyers this autumn. David Vivian runs his hands over its curves – and chats to its German designer

Audi R8
Will it be a proper rival for Porsche and Aston? Or will it be a gorgeous car with a fantastic engine but one that’s been set up to understeer safely at the limit? Richard Meaden could induce oversteer from a pogo stick, so we sent him all the way to Las Vegas for the R8’s moment of truth

The Cost of Running Supercars
Harry Metcalfe is a man who knows all about running supercars. But Nick Hancock of the P1 Club is a man who knows even more. Want to know what breaks down, depreciates faster than it accelerates and is generally a pain in the Coutts? It’s all here

New Civic Type-R
‘Type-R’ is right up there with BMW’s ‘M’ and Porsche’s ‘RS’ monikers. A new Civic Type-R is quite an event, but can it deliver on the promise? Henry Catchpole is first behind the wheel

Hot Hatch Group Test
What’s the current king of the hot hatches? Is it the Civic Type-R (New Hatch On The Block), Astra VXR (World’s Strongest Hatch), Golf GTI (Eton and Harrow Hatch), Leon FR (Budget Hatch), Mégane R26 230 F1 (DIFFicult Hatch) or Focus ST (Lazy BeHatch)? John Barker decides

TVR Typhon
According to Greek mythology, Typhon had a hundred horrible heads, venom dripped from his eyes, lava poured from his mouths and he tore up whole mountains and threw them at the gods. Amongst his children were Cerberus and Chimera… Jethro Bovindon drives TVR’s last Blackpool-built beast on a poignant journey to the old factory

Long-term tests
We welcome a big Merc and an unlikely Nissan to the fleet this month. And Tomalin dabs a tear away and flutters a hanky in the breeze as the Westy rides off into a particularly deep red sunset

Letters
One of our ‘experts’ is taken to task for daring to suggest a Vauxhall could ever replace a Lotus

The Knowledge
Should the Radical SR3 featured in issue 100 be included on our Bedford lap chart? You decide. Email [email protected]

NSX: Birth of an Icon
The Honda NSX is this month’s trip down memory lane. And this month’s pub trivia is that NSX stands for New Sportscar eXperimental

Sounds like a great issue!

Anxious to read that Hot Hatch Group Test!

V8 Vantage Prodrive, 8C competizione, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Weltmeister Trophy Exige, Impreza STI Spec C Type RA-R, BMW 335i Convertible, Toniq-R Duratec, Morego BBR Focus ST280 all sound good to me!

R8, TVR Typhoon and NSX article sound sweeet.

Had my CAR magazine yesterday, there was also Civic TypeR, and R8 vs Gallardo vs Carrera S.

Interesting cars, but the writing is far from Evo.

lol, funny I was only JUST mentioning how I thought the Honda Civic Type R might not get very good reviews when stacked up against the competition...........now based on that cover it looks like Evo mag finally settles it!!!

Honda needs to wake the hell up. 2.0 L NA motors with no torque are not the way to go with a hot hatch..........they mighta been alright when hot hatches were about 1/4 less weight then they are now........but not anymore.

Honda needs to take the US market Civic Si and turn it into a raving all wheel drive turbo 4 cylinder on the same level as the WRX Sti or the Evo..........nuff said.

Oh and that Alfa supercar is HORRIBLE looking. I wonder what they used as inspiration for the front end...a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers helmet?!?

what do you mean what have I smoked?? You saying Im not making sense?!?

That Alfa is hideously ugly. It really does look like they took a Power Rangers helmet and stretched it out to make a car of it. Sorry......

And Honda really does need to stop with the week NA motors and either go V-6 or Turbo....or better yet = a Turbo V-6. Thats one of the things that killed the NSX besides the fact that few people were actually willing to pay 90,000 USD for a honda......... If they had only made a twin turbo version that could blast ferrari out of the water THEN people mighta shelled out 90G. The NSX had EVERYTHING you could want but power. That was the only missign ingredietn to making it a true world dominating super car. Ugh. But when a F355 or 360 is running you not so much more........the choice is pretty clear.

imo the 8C is just ugly as dirt... i agree with obdr. and look at those rims, just hideous! afla has created the most retarted car designs i have ever seen. i cannot understand how everyone just thinks that there is so much "emotion" in the design? it's just plain ugly

I think the Alfa is a breakthrough through design from the company. However, while it's certainly not ugly, it just doesn't get me excited. The front end looks like a bug, with the headlights as the eyes and those huge air intakes as the mouth...

I think the Alfa 8C C looks stunning, one of the best looking cars of the last couple of years!

...and if you don't agree, think again because you're totally wrong

In the new EVO magazine there was an article about P1 club, that does rent some pretty nice wheels;
599, 612 a few F430s
Murcielago, few Gallardos
Ford GT
two Aston Martin Vanquish S, DB9s, pair of V8 Vantages
RS6+, R8 coming
Continental GT(most booked car in the fleet, 305days last year)
M5s and M6s.

There was also a few mentions about the running costs.

Vanquish, loses 30% of value in first year, average service £1527, good reliability now, before very bad because of the transmissions.

DB9, loses 15% of value/year, reliable and cheapish to maintain.

V8 Vantage, 20% depreciation, highish running costs, about the same as Vanquish, eating tyres and so on
Poor Reliability, both have had engined changed.

Audi RS6+, 25%/year, really high running costs £10 474 for the year(eats plenty brakes and tyres, so yes that is correct number), very good reliability still.

Continental GT, 15% depreciation, not so bad running costs and very good reliability

BMW M6, very bad depreciation, 47%, not bad running costs and very good reliability.

Ferrari
456M GT, over 50% depreciation first year, down from £178 000->£82 000 in a year, with only 800miles! Sold.
612, expecting similar depreciation, servicing costs have been for 2006 £21 150.
550/575, expensive to run and the mileage showed also other ways, all kinds of groans and creaks appeared with mileage. Average service £5 287 a pop. Reliability very good.
599, came just a few weeks ago, so too yearly to say anything.
F430, have proved tough mechanically, only problem cracking exhaust manifolds near 16k miles mark, new manifolds modified and better. Highish service £2232 each, running costs for 2006 £14 798, depreciation about 20%, pretty good reliability

Lamborghini
Murcielago, clutches £6 000 plus fitting. Servicing costs for year 2006 £37 391(clubs most expensive car to run, but the P1 members do love it too). 30%depreciation the first year, reliability good.
Gallardo, same bad depreciation 30% in the first year, high running costs 5clutches in the first 7000miles, reliability not so good.

Maserati
Quattroporte, 27%depreciation(Gran Sport was at 19%), very high part prices, good reliability.

Porsche
911, 14 of them, and changed 3times a year, whole fleet of them, between 10 000 and 12 000miles in odometer.
997tt, not loosing value yet, since high demand, but that is soon to change, just look at the 996tt prices at the moment, how they are sinking. Very low running costs, only £351 a pop. Reliability generally good, only the rear engine oil seals fail.

What to expect from 2007, XKR, R8 and Gallardo Spyder, possibly Alfa 8C, Z06 and the new Maserati Coupe. There might come also Carrera GT, Zonda, SLR for members that have been over a year with the club(Enzo was dropped from the list because of fear of Enzo not putting up with the mileage members tend to do with the cars).
