not to mention hotmail is incorporated with apps like MSN Messenger and such...
...and more easily integrated with Outlook.

i must say though i'd give it a chance if i could bring a few hundred emails over from another source, rather than having to slowly and painfully build up the inbox size to even make use of gmails only overbearing advantage - a decent search facility.
bleh, i'm sure over it.

I abandonded gMail because of the privacy issues at stake.

The motivation behind the gMails offer is far from noble - it is blatant privacy theft.

By offering users a gig of mail space, you encourage people to never delete email - and even if they do, the email is never actually deleted off gMails systems - ALL data is preserved for ever.

The result? The reason?

Google is a Data Mining company. Think of the ability to be able to dig through, sort, mine and otherwise manipulate the the email data of hindreds of millions of "customers" all around the world.

These facts mean that notonly will Google let you search your own email, it means they can sell the results of searches through everyone emails.

Imagine - they search for key words and then the email adresses linking messages with contents to people and trends - the out come of a search could be the fact that you and all your Canadian buddies shared 147 emails over a 4 month period discussing an event in Holland - then you guys went overseas and 4 of your friends were arrested at Schipol Airport because the Dutch authorities had been notified by Interpol that "the four Canadian insurgents planning the bombing of a football stadium in Germany" are arriving at 10am.

Far fetched? - no Useful tools and prevention methods? - yes Potential for misuse and exploitation? - yes

No gMail for me.

the only thing I use my gmail account for is junk mail. if I need to store some spam, that's where it goes. As RC45 has pointed out, the service is really pretty lax as far as privacy issues are concerned, so it's sort of dangerous to use it as an address where you send and receive emails that pertain to business and/or school or anything where privacy is a concern.

Why would you use any of these free email accounts any way? As far as I know most ISPs provdie you up to 10 email addresses.

I only use hotmail for junk stuff.

Wrong.

Google has a patented search technology as the key to their business model.

Read their privacy statement very carefully.

Do some research on the specific nature of the search and data retrievel products Google is currently marketing.

You will easily and clearly see that Google has a vested interest to not delete anything stored, but rather make available for the search technology to mine to provide a product and service.

Hotmail on the othe rhand makes a nasty habit of purging data..

Do some research on the business behind the name.

Any company with a corporate motto of "Don't be evil" is suspect to begin with.

I like the way they handle their "Conversations". But I wish that they could include Folders as well as Labels. They way, not everything is in one main "Inbox". Yeah, I know that I am suppose to use the Search function as well as the labels, but sometimes it is just too cluttersome.
