Joining the Miltary
I was just giving it some thought and I wanted to get some perspective on the idea. I realize it's dangerous but I can see it being character building as well ... so that could be an advantage and worth it in that sense. I suppose I'd be stationed in Afganistan if I decide to give it a shot ... to be honest I'm pretty much scared to death of seeing action.
Have any of you served or thought about it seriously?

Canadian Armed Forces?
I was giving it thought aswel but Im just interested in the Canada aspect of it. we got no military. I love military equipment, the whole technological side of it. I grew up in a military town back home alone. I was exposed to all of it at the earliest of ages, used to visit bases every day. There were 3 in my town alone  Western Ukraine, on border with Eastern Europe, so its just packed with that crap. You cant fart withouht getting picked up by some local radar.
Anyway.........we dont have much here from that point, and I would just get bored. Fixing roads, peice keeping in Afganistan....blah
Now when we go to war with States, Im in, just on the American side hehe j/k

yes i have, and i still am thinking about it (it'd be after i finished studying though). I dunno bout the canadian military, but here in holland your age wouldnt be a problem, they dont mind having people with a little more experience in life (rather than some kid who goes somewhere thinking it's all a video game, and then gets scared to shit when he finds out it isn't).
About being scared of seeing action...dont join the infantry or any other fighting unit. That'll help alot already, but ofcourse since you would be in the military they wouldnt send you somewhere to babysit, there'll always be a risk...you'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth it... (i know it is for me). If you're scared of being deployed, then don't join at all... these days you never know what's gonna happen, and who will be deployed where next.

I've served both in europe and the middle east. Frankly, I would rate signing up for active duty as an absolute last resort if you desperately need work.

In Australia, you can apply for undergraduate sponsorships to the military, which pays you a (small) wage on top of uni fees. You then serve out the length of your sponsorship plus one year. Sounds OK, seeing as I had always thought about joining the reserves after graduation, and I might think of applying after a few more years in university.

i considered it, be a good chance to get in shape haha, but the metal in my ankle pretty much put a stop to that. plus, given our conflict at the moment i wouldnt want to sign right up and die.... :x
