Default Renault R5 GT Turbo

Hi there

Just wondering what you guys think of the R5 GT Turbo, I might want to buy one if possible when I turn 18 but look it's only got 120 bhp so not that much taxes, fuel consumption is about avg 7.2 liters / 100 km's, atleast that's what they say on the autoweek site Anyone want to share some thoughts or expiriences of this car with my ? also, anybody know the correct 0-100 km/h of this car ? looks fast for a first car  but fun

Thx, grtz.

As Dani knows, Im quite a big renault 5 gt turbo fan as well (here called the car as "soplillo"); and actually, despite the power ( "only" 115cv in the first versions, and 120cv in the later ones) that seems low, in contrast the car weights very little (760kg instead of 800kg), but the most important thing about the car is not the power, its the sensation of a sporty car itself; for instance, the old turbo cars are distinguished because of the huge lag which means less effectiveness in rallying and less smooth car on the road, but better sensations when the turbo starts working; In addition, the car in question offers great sporty sensations because of the steering wheel, great brakes, and etcetera

On the other hand, the cars biggest weakpoint is just the insurance problem; the car is considered extremely dangerous, and therefore the car is not likely at all to be insured to a young person; perhaps the situation in Belgium is a bit better, but Im afraid that the answer is no

Nonetheless, as mi knowledge is limited to the hot hatches the most expert mate to answer every single question is dani; ......here as its said...the experience, the mother of the science

Thanks Dani & Ford Capri 2.8i for this information, I knew one of you guys would help me out damn, I didn't know that about insurance, I thought they measured the price you'll pay per 'kw'

Other question: do you guys know which other cars like this one, ex rally legends, old turbo cars with huge turbo lag like capri said that are in the same price area or just a bit higher (but noth THAT much like evo's and impreza's) and fun like this one ? perhaps like the Integrale 16V or the more expensive EVO versions , escort & sierra cosworth, 5 GT Turbo,...? thx guys

You can find many many cars with turbo from 1985 to 1993 approximately; in fact, during that period many car manufacturers started to produce many turbo cars because of many things such as the demand, just in case in order to homologate a grA car since the rallying was considered challenging and popular; furthermore, the requirements of safety, confort, pollution, and other aspect werent considered as they are now on

As a result, youll be able to find a huge range of turbo cars; since you dont know very clearly which segment you prefer, ill make a list containing the hot hatches on the one hand, and the 2.0 litre turbo cars cathegory as well

Lets start with the hot hatches;

Renault: 5 GT Turbo, Renault 5 Alpine Turbo (in britain it was called gordini turbo, and in Spain Copa turbo) its predecessor

Fiat : Uno turbo (IMO the most similar car to the renault 5 in every term)/punto GT

Ford: Fiesta turbo (quite an explosive engine; 1.6 derived from the escort RS Turbo) but its not brilliant in suspension, brakes, chassis

MG: Rover Metro Turbo (although it is older, its considered as an hot hatch)

Mitsubishi: Colt Turbo

Daihatsu charade GT Turbo

Toyota Starlet Turbo

Lancia Y10 Turbo

Renault 9/11 turbo

Lancia Delta HF Turbo

Ford Escort RS Turbo (in england is called XR Turbo as well as far as I know)

Volvo 440/460/480 Turbo

2.0 turbo cars

Lancia Delta HF Integrale/Lancia Dedra Integrale/Lancia Delta HPE/Alfa Romeo 155 Q4/Fiat Coupe Turbo (except the delta integrale, the rest of the cars have about 190bhp, and front wheel drive cars except the 155, and the dedra)

Opel/Vauxhall Vectra/Cavalier, Calibra turbo

Peugeot 405 turbo 16

Subaru Impreza/Legacy GT Turbo

Nissan 200SX turbo

Mitsubishi Galant VR4/Lancer Evo I

Renault 21 turbo

Ford Sierra cosworth 2wd/4wd

Audi S2

If any doubt, nonetheless, dont hesitate to write the querie, and Dani, myself or somebody else, will try to help

Nonetheless, once you chose the Gt turbo as an example; Id say that the fiat uno turbo was the most similar car to the renault 5 in every term such as the suspensions, brakes, steering wheel.......

On the other hand, the ford fiesta is another good choice, but it lacks many things such as the non sporty at all steering wheel, not discs brakes in the rear wheels, and even dangerous suspension settings; in addition, the metro lacks the performances and other things from the fiat and the renault since it has a 4 speed gearbox, 90cv (too little compared to the fiat and the renault) but nonetheless quite a great fun

finally, the main problem of the turbo cars and GTI hot hatches here is the insurance, specially the turbo cars; as far as I know, this is one of the reasons why renault and ford decided to retire the turbo cars from their range as far as I know
