Default PS3 keeps astounding me...

...so far the only USB device that the PS3 hasn't detected and been able to use, is the iPhone, but that is no surprise, as Windows can't even see the flash memory on the iPhone until you run iTunes.

But can you imagine how pleasently surprised we were when I brought an $80 Epson CX8400 colour printer home yesterday - and just for shits and giggles we plugged it up to the PS3.

Wham bam thankyou mam, it not only detected an Epson printer was connected, but even saw it as a CX8400, and we went to the Photo Album and printed out a couple photos directly from the PS3, with a choice of paper type, paper size etc.

So ---- for the love of God can someone PLEASE send a PS3 over to the farging morons in Redmond and get Micro$haft to see what a well designed and useful and expandable and universal serial bus equiped game console is supposed to funciton like...

This device is the best home entertainment gadget we have ever bought - bar none (well there was the Sybian... but thats not really for use with guests in the living room )

Flawless 1080p BluRay support, native DVD upscaling and playing, universal support for every USB storage device to upload and download and save data to, photo album, printer support, unlimited harddrive storage upgrade support, video file player and storage (I dont watch videos grabbed off MW on the PC anymore), CD to MP3 ripper, music library and web browser.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot, an awesome game console, with native backwards compatibilty (with the 20GB and 60GB versions) to play all PS1 and PS2 titles (well, everyone we have tried).

And there a bunch of PSP compatibility functions I have no interest in for now.

If you are planning on joining the BluRay camp this year, do yourslef a favour and start at least with a PS3, you will not regret it for an instant.

In the last year, all the XBox360 has been used for, is to play Test Drive Unlimited, Forza, Forza2, PGR3 and PGR4 - thats pretty much it - I mean ther ereally is nothing else you can do with it.

My Xbox 360 is also my only dvd player. Between that and Forza 2, it sees lots of use.

That's pretty awesome that the PS3 can recognize stuff like that. It's functionality as a blue ray player is the most convinving argument I've heard for its 500 dollar price tag. While it's more flexible than the xbox, it still pretty much is just a game system and blue ray player. I guess they have wireless internet too, so that's a plus.

Yeah, I gotta admit, I've been using it a lot more since they enabled Divx/Xvid play back on it. Just plugged my 200GB external on there and play hours and hours of movies.

And this is even more surprising, it EVEN PLAYS High Def videos! Amazing.

Hehe - I already have too many of those.... but the main reason is that all the photos are on the PS3 now, so we really did need a way to print them.

SO I got the Epson since its like all the new colour printers, you can just plug your camera memory card directly into it and print. The idea was to transfer any images we need printed to a card and then print from the printer - but as it turnsout, no deen fo rthat.

You just press Triangle while viewing an image and choose the Printer Icon.

It is that simple, so know anyone in the famaily can print from the photo album.

Plus the CX8400 comes in a stylish shiny black and chrome setup, so it even fits in next to the PS3 andother home entertainment goodies.

I cannot agree with you more. When Sony did the price drop on the PS3 6 months back, it really eliminates my thought of getting a delicated blu-ray player. Now I am waiting paitently to have HD bitstream support.

Does it matter? Chances are the "aquired" videos on the external drive have been ripped anyway

no, i don't think so. I know of no ripping program that has enabled bluray, or the now-defunct HDDVDs, ripping. soon though *fingers crossed*

hell yeah I love this thing. I bought it about 6 months ago and just opened her up about 2 months ago (don't ask) but I love the thing. I still play the 360 more though since I am addicted to COD4 on Live.

if the xvid file has ac3 multichannel audio the ps3 will support it...

lol @ the sybian remark...it seems u and Howard have some things in common

unfortunately the ps3 (current ones) won't be able to bitstream TrueHD or DTS MA cause of the hdmi chip it uses (maybe when sony updates the ps3, it might include the new chip), but for now ps3 will only internally decode hd audio...(dts ma is coming....)

so i would have to get a 60GB version for ~640 euros if i wanted the downards compatibility? there is no other way?

the 40GB versions start at ~370 euros... which does make a huge difference to me as a student, and i am seriously thinking about this console...

Try buy a 20GB version on eBay - well worth it.
