Default 5th Gear - S13 EP04 - 11th February, 2008 - Discussion

More motoring thrills and spills as Fifth Gear continues its 13th series with Vicki Butler-Henderson, Tom Ford, Tiff Needell, Jason Plato and Jonny Smith at the helm. Tonight, Tiff Needell drives James Bond’s car; Tom Ford gets aboard the ultimate 4x4; Jonny Smith drives to Poland in the world’s first diesel grand tourer; and Vicki Butler-Henderson stages a shoot-out between two nippy vans.

In the most recent James Bond film, ‘Casino Royale’, 007’s personal transport came in the form of the new Aston Martin DBS – though its screen appearance was short-lived thanks to a spectacular crash. Fortunately, Tiff Needell gets to drive one for a little longer, then meets the man who performed the famous film stunt – an ideal opportunity to find out who is the better driver in a series of nail-biting challenges.

Elsewhere tonight, Jonny Smith examines the world’s first diesel grand tourer – the BMW 635d. However, as diesel now costs more in this country than anywhere else in the world, should the British public be taking any notice of this new vehicle? Jonny thinks so, and embarks on a 600-mile transcontinental trip to illustrate why. Can the 635d make it to Poland on a single tank of fuel?

Back in the UK, Vicki Butler-Henderson turns her attention to the ‘white van’ man – a common sight on any urban road. In response to an apparent desire among van drivers to drive even faster than normal, manufacturers have been working on a range of quicker cargo carriers. Vicki takes the two fastest vans of the moment to the track to find out which is quicker – the Mercedes Vito X or the VW Transporter Sportline.

Also this week, Tom Ford tests the ultimate 4x4 – the 12-tonne, 10-foot tall Unimog. This beast can tackle steep inclines and wade through water over a metre deep, explaining why it is the vehicle of choice for the military’s Special Boat Service. Tom gets to grips with the complex machine then tests his nerve on the type of jaw-dropping terrain only the Unimog can tackle.
