Default newsgroups... what are they/how do they work

Sorry in advance, but what are newgroups.... i seem to have not noticed them until now, and i can't understand them.

I've not signed up to any just yet, but i think i may sign up to this one
http://v3.newzbin.com/

What lies beneath the surface of these sites?... direct HTTP downloads, or access to torrents, and a user account which requires you to keep a healthy UL/DL ratio?

Any further explanation would be welcome

That kind of makes sense....

I've registered on newzbin, but i need to add credit to my account to be able to so much... does this credit give me access to torrent files?

Strange that they should charge for a service that encourages copyright theft/infringement.

I use them.

You need a site/forum where they say what they posted and where. Then you can copy the filename they give to www.binsearch.info for instance, look it up and if it finds the file you can make a NZB link of it. Now you can open this NZB link with programs like Grabit or Newsleecher. In those programs you have to create a server with which it downloads whatever you want to download. You can either use your own connection as a server or go for a payserver.

You should get over the idea that newsgroups have anything to do with bittorrent. It's a complete different way of downloading altogether. One big difference and advantage over torrents is that you don't have to upload anything! Over time I've downloaded several terabytes from newsgroups, but I didn't upload one single byte to usenet!

This is an advantage because it is fully legal to download copyrighted video & sound files of any kind (at least in the Netherlands). The uploading part is what's illegal.

Here's a great tutorial with everything you need to know about how to get started on newsgroups:

It may seem complicated at first, but in fact it's really easy!
Good luck!

And the irony of it all?

Newsgroups are the original digital commucation mechanism... they predate the Intardnetwebs

Talk about going full circle hehe

I would love to help you with a free server.. problem is, I don't use one myself

I got tired of working with crappy free Dutch servers which only gave me incomplete files, so I decided to get a payserver. It costs me about €6,50 each month, but the retention is 50 days and I hardly ever get incomplete files, plus I can download files at my maximum internet connection speed. A good payserver is really recommended, imo even if you don't download huge amounts of data. It's just so much more convenient to work with.

For Heroes and other TV shows, you should check out posts by NoPoints4U

^ I considered Eweka, but then chose Tweaknews, because for me it was a little bit cheaper at the time.
I might try Eweka when my Tweaknews subscription ends this summer. I saw they improved their retention up to 70 days! Great stuff
