Default Hi-8 to computer?

ok, my roomate just moved out and said anything he left i could have if i wanted. One of those things was his Hi-8 camcorder. I'll take it if there is a way to take the S-video or A/V jacks to my computer instead of having to put them on those stupid mini tapes

anyone have any idea as to how to do this if it's possible?

Since it's a HI-8, i'm assuming the camera doesn't have a firewire plug like on Mini-DV camcorders.

If not, you'll need a video capture card or external capture device for your computer. Back when I had an 8mm camera I bought a Dazzle brand USB capture thing. I haven't checked prices on them in years, though, since i got a mini-dv cam i haven't needed it.

you could probably rig something with a TV card, as well, but that's probably around the same price overall.

It's possible.

You'll need a capture card with the right inputs. Most TV Tuner card and graphics cards are able to do it.

If your computer already has RCA or S Video inputs then as far as I know, all you would need is a capture program.

You can also use a USB Capture card.

The quality and performanc eof those "hardware" capture devices is nto that great - even for $50.

If you had a bunch of Hi8 tapes, there would be value in buying a used Digital8 camcorder that has Firewire out (supports both Hi8 and Digital8)...

...or if you want to get into decent quality Digital Video on the cheap - $120 will buy a half decent used Digital8 camcorder on eBay.

Don;t waste the $50 on those other devices..

i'm still debating just hawking the thing. The battery is probably going to cost more than the camera is worth

actually, while loading the uahul today..i realized he forgot his Ibanez GTR 70 4 string bass and 15 watt Crate amp  I called him to make sure this wasn't an oversight and that i'd run it up to his buddy who still works at the shop, but he said he didn't want it or need it any more

so now i have 2 Ibanez basses and an Ibanez guitar

The rest of the shit, i'm just going to leave. I don't have any use for the computer desk, tv stand, bookshelf, potted plant, surfboard....etc etc.

I could easily hawk everything he left for at least $400 but i don't feel like lugging it across the country first
