Default How do I make my own FTP based site?

Well I decided to update my sitelast week. Then I saw how much damn ads there are on it and that I also wanna redesign the whole thing. So last nite I searched for like 2 and a half hours looking for free website hosting. I found a few decent ones and some that just sucked. I finially found one that meets my requirements but........it wouldnt let me add my own custom CSS or anything. So I was pissed about wasting all the time.

Then I figured why not host the site off my own computer? I have a quite a few computers just lying around collecting dust so I can use one of them as my servers.

So in other words I want to know can I host my website off of an FTP server that I made for free? IF so how do I do it and what do I need? I just need to know how to get the page online then once I get that done I can update the site myself and what not. Please someone help me! Thanks very much.

FTP is FTP, HTTP is HTTP...what you need is a HTTP server such as apache, IIS ... etc on your home computer. However, it will be very limited due to bandwidth avaliable.

So I can run a website off of an FTP? I could sworn it was possible!

Oh well. So you say I need an HTTP server? Would an old ass computer do it?
Specs are 600 mhz
384 megs of ram.
HDD can be anything from 10 gigs to 60 gigs 7200 RPM.

You think that machcine can handle being an HTTP server? If not let me see if I can get some of my old AMD's working. Also apache and IIS is all free? I dont want like a site such as JW or Piston Heads. I except my site to get less than 100 hits per day so it should be very easy on the bandwidth.

Use IIS ..... you can make both Http and ftp work on it .....

you system specifications dosnt really matter .. what really matters is the the internet speed ...

IIS is al free .....you just need to install it ... control panel > add remove programs > windows setup

My internet speed is I think 6 down and 2 or 3 up. You have any experience with IIS? Is it easy to update my site from it?

umm...where's the unit for ur speed.

Local webserver means, updating the website is the matter of changing and saving the file in www root directory (or whereever that file is sub related)

Your address will be your IP address of ur internet connection, if you share your internet using a router at home, make sure you port forward to the computer hosing the Web server.

All web servers works on the same principle.

I wouldnt mind but I am planning on having the site up for like ever and want unlimited bandwidth.....or just no down times. This way if I find anything nice I can share with JW special members and also if someone wants I can host something for them. I also have many computers collectingdust so why not just put them to use you know? If i have to I will make 3 damn servers Anyways I cant wait till I start this shit in a month or two! Plus I dont have to worry bout sharing illegal shit since most hosters dont allow it I believe.

Yeab but with that your site visitors will still have to watch some sort of advertising.
Ya but no pop up ads or anything. I used this service once and it was pretty good just a little ad at the bottom. Nothing too bad.
