Olympics - Day eight Highlights

The action on the athletics track kicks off with the men's 20km walk, eventually won by Russia's Valeriy Borchin

The heats of the men's steeplechase get under way, with spray from the water jump a welcome distraction in the hot conditions

In the pool, Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry finally gets a gold medal to go with her three silvers as she wins the women's 200m backstroke

Michael Phelps celebrates after pipping Serbia's Milorad Cavic by a hundredth of a second to win his seventh gold medal

An emotional Cesar Cielo Filho causes a huge shock in the men's 50m freestyle final to claim Brazil's first gold of the Games

In the women's freestyle wrestling, Clarissa Chun (in blue) of the US grapples with Sofia Mattsson of Sweden

New Zealand (in blue) are beaten 4-1 by the US in the pool stage of the women's hockey, and stay bottom of their group

Ali Bourrale Fathia of Djibouti is quickly out of the blocks in the heats of the women's 100m

In an all-China final, Zhang Ning defends her Olympic badminton singles title by beating world number one Xie Xingfang

An upset occurs in the women's single sculls where Bulgaria's Rumyana Neykova beats double Olympic champion Ekaterina Karsten

Norway's Olaf Tufte becomes the men's single sculls champion while GB's Alan Campbell comes home in fifth

Team GB do pick up a medal, however, in the women's double sculls with bronze going to Elise Laverick and Anna Bebington

A third-place finish is also achieved by Matthew Wells and Steve Rowbotham in the men's double sculls shortly after

Great Britain have a fifth gold when Tom James, Steve Williams, Pete Reed and Andy Hodge win the men's four ahead of Australia

In cycling's points race, GB's Chris Newton earns a bronze with Joan Llaneras and Roger Kluge taking gold and silver

Bradley Wiggins wraps-up another victory for Great Britain in the 4000m individual pursuit against Hayden Roulston of New Zealand

The velodrome crowd are then treated to a British masterclass in the men's keirin where Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar finish first and second

There is disappointment for British hope Kelly Sotherton who misses out on a heptathlon medal after finishing fifth

In the main event of the night, Usain Bolt storms to a new world record as he produces a stunning run to win 100m gold

Unbelievably, the Jamaican took his foot off the gas with 20 metres left to begin celebrating yet still clocked a time of 9.69 seconds

After underlining his dominance in such an extraordinary race, the question now remains as to how much faster Bolt can go
