Nikon won't opt for a ccd sensor anymore for their new D3 range which will be launched later on this year ... fall season I'm just waiting.
What I have heard is that it will be quite something, they are testing a new continuous focus out which they want to blend in the D3 range.
They will probably carry 10 or 12megapixel sensors just like Canon's.
The 1D mark III is an ultimate camera that's for sure, if I would be a canon user I bought one of those asap.

What Nikon's D2xs is concerned; It still is an up-to-date camera. To my mind there is no other camera where you can compare it with. Personally, I don't think it is comparable to the 1Ds. First of all you have 12 vs 16 mpixels. The two sensors are completely different, especially zhen it comes to the size of the pixels. The D2x sensor has much smaller pixels which means that the detail you get is mindblowing and for what I have heard is slightly better than the 1Ds.
The 2 main areas which will attract a lot of attention in the future are noise reduction and speed (frames/s)

Finally; Ok, I'm a nikon user and nikon fan but this is how I see it: Canon has always been first with releasing new cameras. This makes it slightly easier for the other party. It is just a matter of wait and see. I don't think there would have been a D2X that soon without Canon's 1ds

Here is yet another great video/commercial of the markIII. Why doesn't Nikon make such nice teasers ??

Cheers

Big sensor, less megapixels is the way to go. Excited to see what Nikon can bring to the table with their new pro camera.

That commercial reminds me of something out of the 80s.
