I really started hearing about the 0-100-0 test when Viper came on the scene. Ever since about then, I think Motor Trend has been doing it annually. I don't think it's a good test for all around performance, but for brute, in-your-face acceleration and braking...it'll certainly do.

I didn't know the Ultima was considered a true production car...?

It's just a kit car that'll send you flying into the first tree. Now if I could only afford one...

That's what I thought it was considered, a "kit car" and not a true "production car". How do they decide something is a "production car"?

I think it has to be fully built when it leaves the factory, and a certain number of them have to be produced. Of course, it also has to pass safety/emissions tests.
From what I know the Ultima comes assembled from the factory, but it doesn't come with an engine. The most popular engine for it is the Chevy 5.7 l. V8.

Edit: I betcha' RC gets a hard-on everytime he hears "Chevy Small Block" or "LS1" or "5.7 l. V8".

It's always fun when a small company succeeds like this!

Isn't the Ultima GTR more of a pure track car, than any (or perhaps most) cars from Ferrari, Lambo or other recognized supercar companies? It might not be very fair to compare it to a "normal" supercar... Still, it's a great achievement.

And I know those TDI monsters can smoke many of the petrol running cars with their excellent torque.

Smoke, yes. Beat in a race, no.

the record the ultima beat was held by the caterham r500evo, another purpose-built track car. the best 0-100-0 time by a "true" road car is held by the enzo, at 10.97 sec (over half a second faster than a McLaren F1).............see magazine scans section- Autocar 2004 0-100-0 contest.
