yeah exactly, thats why I was guessing how fast I was going... I get familiar of how fast I usually go in what gear... and by knowing what gear im in, I can sort of remember how fast im going.

Putting your knee down really has nothing to do with how fast you are going. You could put your knee down doing circles in a parking lot if you really wanted to. Many times putting a knee down is more about style than anything else. Yes, you will/should have your body shifted over, and in many cases your leg will be out to some degree, but it isn't really necessary to have a knee on the ground. Many attribute a knee on the ground as meaning the rider is really fast and very skilled. That is not always the case. Just wanted to point that out.
