i will say this, however... for an extra $100 you will have a lens that works ok... but you'll be wanting to upgrade badly before too long.
I can only agree on that!

Low budget lenses that are ok:
- Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di (although quality control sucks, you have to be lucky to find a good one on the first try, I did )
- Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 (same story here)
- Canon 100-300 f/5.6 L (old and discontinued, but razorsharp)
- Canon 80-200 f/2.8 (same story as above)
- Sigma 70-300 APO DG (best budget-telelens under $500)

The best place (IMHO) on the net for lensreviews: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

i would wait till PMA 2006 Show before making a decision. there are usally some pretty big announcements from companies ex. last year the 350d was introduced. these annouements could effect price of the current cams on sale

Yeah, I figured Canon and Nikon are going to release an updated digital SLR sometime soon considering the models i'm looking at are quite dated..

I'm gonna make a trip to a local photo shop and check out these cameras first hand..

Dutch - how about only $570?

www.dealstudio.com/?r_id=3#6286

Actually the XT/350D was announced Feb '05 and the D70s/D50 were announced Apr '05.

Camera model life cycle wise that is still pretty new. Considering that it'll be at least another 6 to 12 months before the update comes (if not longer). Correct me if I am wrong.

But PMA is only at the end of the month, so waiting a few extra weeks really can't hurt. Either way, both the XT/350D and the D50 are great cameras that you can't really lose out on.

Personally for me, I am in the same boat and don't know which one to choose. All of my friends have the Rebel XT which means more lense to borrow, but at the same time the D50 seems like a really great deal. But the XT has more features is really is more on par w/ the D70s.

$570 shipped.. that is a pretty good deal.. but thats for the 28-80mm lens which from what I heard is not as good as the 18-55 lens..

I'm really really tempted to just go to my local camera shop and spend the extra money to just have the damn camera in my hands already..

I'd love to get the XT because of the size, slightly faster shooting, and slightly more pixels, but the stock lens and price aren't good enough for me.

Plus, I have a couple Nikon Film SLR's with lenses I should be able to use with the D50 and vice versa..

You could also buy a body-only kit and get a used 18-70 kitlens from the D70/D70s, as that's supposed to be much better than the 18-55.

Now that's a stupid decision you took. I am appalled. How could you do such a thing. Pathetic ....

Talking about the Burt Reyolds picture of course. Jeez. The D50 is a sweetie though
