Default New Opel Astra

Hi:

How do you find the new Opel Astra. I find it really nice. The fight between the astra and the new Golf will be really hard.
I hope that car arrives to Chile, because now we have the old astra, with a brazilian restyling and old tecnology (mainly 8v engines), and its not too "hot".

I sometimes dream of all Opels/Vauxhalls (except the Speedster, which is a Lotus anyway) in the world being destroyed. Then I wake up to the sad reality.

This

is the only Opel I ever liked :fadein:

It's the Opel GT (1968 - 1973, a sort of mini Vette

I also liked the new Opel Manta and the Astra OPC Extreme! Also, the Calibra looks pretty good!

Why do you hate the Opels so much?

I think they are fantastic cars for the price.
I've had 3 Opels, a '92 Vectra 1.6S a '97 Vectra 1.8 16v and an Omega MV6 3.0. All of these cars pretty reliable and very good.
The people that say "Opel/vauxhall are bad cars" is because they never own one or they don't make care of it. The Opels are fine cars, but a little delicate, you must make all the maintenance.

Sadly GM take away all the German Opels from Chile. Now they're Chevrolet and made in Brazil and come with poor tecnology .

Why should I hate a car manufacturer I don't like Opel or Vauxhall, they just not my cup of tea
Not their exterior, with the exception of the GT, nor their interior or technology.
And yes I've driven Opels, a '95 Astra Station and a '00 Astra Sedan from some time. Both as company car :fadein:

Is this directed towards me?
No it isn't. I'm speaking in plural. English is a strange lenguage, the singular and plural are the same, the word "you". In spanish we have 2 different words, "tu" (singular) and "ustedes" (plural).

I've realized that the question really goes to stradale for his answer. Sorry

OK, I'll try to explain it, but I don't think you will understand because you obviously like them. In a sense, t's a bit like levensnevel said, it's not my cup of tea. Only with me it's a bit worse. I'm probably taking it all too serious, but I do really hate them. Some cars I don't care about I don't take notice of, but somehow Opels get on my nerves. They represent everything I don't want in a car.

Although recent styling is not as disastrous as it has been, I still don't like the look of them. Opels seem to have always been about being as bland as possible, just not to offend anyone.

The interior and exterior don't have a quality feel (also in this area Opel is doing better, but it still isn't up to the level of the competition). I can take this from a car that makes up for it with personality, like an Alfa Romeo, but not from a box on wheels.

The controls in the Opels I have driven (Astras, Corsas, Vectra and a Calibra) seem to be set up in such a way just to prevent one from having fun behind the wheel. I didn't think much of the pedals, steering and gearbox.

The engines don't add any excitement either. They work and that's it.

The handling of older cars, such as the previous Corsa is horrible. That car is truly unstable and I wouldn't want to drive it every day. New ones are OK, but nothing special. A Ford Focus is far better.

Spending time behind the wheel of an Opel just makes me curse and swear at the damn things. No other car manufacturer is capable of doing that. Although I don't like Hyundais I'd rather drive one of those. I really do. Maybe I've gone biased after all those years of loathing Opels, but for me it's the way I feel about them.

I'd love to drive the Speedster some time. Maybe that can change my mind.

Bear in mind, this is a personal opinion. Sorry in advance.

It's Ok, I just wanted to know the reason.

You have some trues, but they are not too importants for me.

Everyone has its own likes and dislikes, I hate some brands too, so I can (hardly) understand.

The new Astra looks quite nice, and the design wouldnt look out of place one segment higher.

In comparison to the Golf, with its compressd Phaeton looks, tha Astra will be able to finally hold its own.
