Default Smart in north america (Canada to be specific) finally!

Smart fortwo. Mercedes-Benz announced this week at the Canadian International Auto Show that it will start selling the diminutive (it's only 8 feet - 2.5 metres - long) Smart fortwo cdi in Canada later this year. The fortwo cdi is a two-seater available in either coupé or cabrio version. Equipped with an in-line 3-cylinder, 0.8 litre state-of-the art common rail diesel engine that delivers 40 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque, with an electronically governed top speed of 120 km/h, it consumes a scant 3.5 litres of diesel fuel per 100 km. Despite its size, it will have a great deal of standard features - exclusive in its class - including electronic stability program, brake assist and ABS. While prices have not been confirmed, the base model coupé will start from $16,000 and the base model cabrio will start at less than $20,000.

For CAD$16k, it's not as expensive as expected. Wonder if it'll become as popular as the MINI over here. Hopefully they'll bring in the Coupe in the near future!

very cool indeed, i read the article in yesterdays Toronto Star auto show section....does ne one in europe have interior shots of the smart? im curious if its as unique as the minis...? also this car is half a metre smaller than the regular mini, confirming it as the smallest car ever to come to canada!

Canada will also be getting the Toyota Echo Turbo, Nissan X-Trail, Jaguar X-Type Estate, Pontiac Pursuit, and VW Passat TDI. None of these are coming to America.

The Mini wont be coming to America until at least 2006, and it wont be the City Coupe (ForTwo), instead the ForMore mini-SUV.

EDIT: Now that I remember, Washington DC did import some Smart Citys for official use. Passed one on one of their highways near Dulles.
