Default I took the lid off my airbox... *Updated with pics/vids*

...sounds like a touring car!

I am so going to have to do a vid of it, it sounds fantastic at wide-open throttle!

I haven't removed the air filter, just in case anyone's worried...I may be childish but not completely stupid!

It might actually suck in more hot air without the lid.

Not a chance of that.. the intake of any modern car has a severly restricted inlet opening... removing the lid is a free 5hp trick to increase the size of the intake inlet opening on a C5 Corvette.. (just be sure to ziptie the air filter in place in our cas4e - it must surely help out the 4 banger as well.

...any way, the air is being taken in from the same general area, just more of it (same temp as originally - right ?) so he should be breathing easier... and "hot air" is pretty much all you get in a Texas summer

I did something similar last weekend actually, on the WRX there is a resonator between the air intake at the front and the airbox which I removed.....now I can hear it sucking in the air even more and even a slight whistle from the BOV when getting off the gas.

Yeah, a couple of pics will replace a thousand words, but as I'm at work...

Basically the stock inlet hole with the lid on gives about 4 square inches gap for the air to pass into the airbox and then thru the filter.

Taking the lid off, practically the whole of the cone filter is exposed to suck air in.

Of course, the induction roar is the reason I did this, not for any performance gains!

It is sucking in hot air, however as RC said, the air is being taken in from the same general area, just more of it, with ambient temps of 88-92F this weekend it's hardly 'cold air' to start with!

Pics will come later, as will a couple of short vids (with and without the airbox lid). My camera is pretty crap for video (320x320) but the audio is always ok.

I think it sounds like the S2000 should sound now I will be interested in your opinions after I post the vids - I'll try and do it tonight.

I put a drop in air filter into the Saab 93 and it made a heck of a difference. All of a sudden you could clearly hear the turbo spool up and 'pssssht' from the BPV as you let off the gas - With the stock filter you could barely hear the turbo, you had to be going through a tunnel or under a bridge with windows down.

I am not sure if it's the same for all turbo cars but on the Saab you could add a 3" downpipe with a race cat to really let that turbo sing. (I only had a 2.5" catback which barely made any difference)

You're quite right, if anyone has mod privileges and wants to move the thread, then please do!

that is kind of what i did with my ranger. The intake piping and airbox on my year aren't really clogged up with anything. But there is a splash guard right behind the front bumper. and when i removed that, behold, the opening to the intake. its about a 4-5in opening and now i have a stock ram air I will try and get some pics to show what i am talking about.

But T/A thats some of the best mods...... Free ones

Indeed, pikey mods as we call them in the UK!

A good one on the LS1 engines is to bypass the coolant which goes through (and warms) the throttle body. You can also dremel quite a bit out of the 'Ram Air' plastic intake (thinking of the Trans Am WS6)

I am sure RC knows about these ones already, though

Nice, can't wait to hear what it sounds like. I have an intake on my car, and it makes a world of difference in sound. Even if it doesn't give me any horsepower I don't care...it just sounds so cool.

The best part of it is, unlike an exhaust, your car isn't super loud all the time, only when you really get on it and are above a certain RPM does it really get loud...

Indeed, at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle you can't even tell, which was useful passing a lurking Crown Vic this morning.

yeah the rangers have a hotwater-bypass mod which re-routes the coolant (heating/warming) the intake manifold. But if it gets to cold where you live then you need it. but Texas, FL etc. could go without it.

edit:

here are some pics of my intake mod

Thr front of the truck (duh)

the gap between the bumper and body leading to opening

opening behind the bumper about 2x5 in.

tubing leading from opening to filter box.

opening in filter box, about 2in.

tubing from filter boxe to intake manifold.
