I've got about 100k mainly through crimes, cars and booze a couple times. I get caught almost every time with narcotics.. is that just more practice needed?
Also, how many bullets should you buy if you have just bought a gun?

After smashing the window you noticed a couple making love in the back, luckely they didn't come after you!
You stole a car, but because you were too nervous, you crashed against a tree along the road. Luckily you didn't hurt yourself.
On the verge of breaking a window, you realised that this was the car of the don of one of the big families. Therefore you left it untouched.
You're not a smart guy, are you? Remember to bring some tools next time.
The car you wanted was protected you couldn't get it
Somebody chased you, unfortunately you had to ditch the car

Don't sweat it. Keep trying. Also make sure you have a few successful smaller crimes before nicking a car.
