I would guess he crashed sideways into a tree or something like that, because driver airbag didn't deploy. Mus have hit somevhere just before A pillar, that's why engine got torn out. Seen soma crashes like that, usually (if the car hasn't got any side airbags/curtains) you hit your head on B pillar, that's the most dangerous thing (besde legs getting injured). I think the car stood up very well - if I have to crash like that, I wouldn't like to be in a Clio or Punto or so ...
