The thread is no longer available and I can't find any other news confirming this.

Are we sure this is accurate?

According to the poster, he spoke on the phone with a good friend of Phill's who said that he passed away yesterday. Phill had an empty seat at Pebble.

I'm not sure why the thread was removed... perhaps because there is no absolute verification yet.

Yea, it's comfirmed. It's all over the various automotive blogs now. I'm glad we had him when we did. It's cool that he was around long enough to his spot on the new walk of fame in Long Beach a year or two ago.
