Default can't connect to any ftp

guys, I'm dumb in this way of knowledge, so here's my problem: my housemate was connected to the internet and I was getting connected through his laptop via ethernet. that time I connected to any FTPs with no problem. now my housemate is gone and I've got connection straight from the modem. and since that time everything works fine, just that damn FTP connection doesn't work anymore ... any ideas why? I repeat, I'm dumb in this way of knowledge :silly: . Thanks for help!!!

this is what I get when trying to get connected (those xxxxx are of course exchanged for real letters and numbers)
STATUS:> Getting listing "/pub"...
STATUS:> Resolving host name ftp.xxxxxxx.com...
STATUS:> Host name ftp.xxxxxxxx.com resolved: ip = xx.xxx.xx.xx.
STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server ftp.xxxxxx.com:21 (ip = xx.xxx.xx.xx)...
ERROR:> The connection failed due to an error or timeout.
1) Verify that the destination IP address is correct.
2) Increase the connection timeout threshold under Global Settings | Connection.
3) Switch to the opposite data connection type (PASV or PORT) under Site Settings | Type tab.
4) Verify that the problem is not local by trying to connect to an alternate server.
5) If a server name was used, verify it resolves to the correct address.
6) If using a local server table for server name resolution, check to see that it doesn't resolve to an obsolete address.
7) Try pinging the address.
8. If you are using a router, verify the router is up and running (check by pinging it and then ping an address outside of the router).
9) Do a traceroute to the destination to verify all routers along the connection path are operational.
10) Verify that your subnet mask is setup properly.
11) Verify that your local software or hardware firewall is not blocking outbound connections originating from CuteFTP.
12) Verify that your anti-virus software is not at fault (try disabling it).

yes, it's actually my account on JW's FTP, then TT's (probably doesn't work anymore anyway), my dad's FTP and twboy's FTP. so atleast 3 of them are up to date and working...

i had almost this exact same problem about a year ago...
i had the settings in the modem/router done up incorreclty... basically i was connecting through a pre-defined IP when i should've been connecting through an auto-detect...

i think it doesnt have anything to do with cute "ftp"...

basically i configured myself to connect incorrectly...
mabey if you open up the network places wizard, and set up for "directly connect to the internet" you will fix it...
