Default 5th Gear - S16 EP1 - 8th June, 2009 - Discussion

The motoring show returns for its 16th run with another lovingly compiled, tightly packed series of motoring glee. Along with all the essential consumer advice, stunning driving and beautiful cars, this first programme features a deathdefying loop-the-loop stunt, a race against David Coulthard and a test to see if buying an old banger can beat the credit crunch. The series kicks off in spectacular fashion as resident stuntman Steve Truglia sets out to perform the most ambitious stunt the show has ever attempted, hoping to beat a world record in the process. One of the most dangerous stunts in the world, the so-called ‘death loop’ will see Steve attempt to drive round the biggest loop-the-loop ever made...

Also this week, Formula 1 driver-turned-TV pundit David Coulthard meets up with Tiff Needell for an extreme van-driving challenge. With a normal white van and a 300bhp racing machine at hand, Tiff devises some unusual challenges in which he hopes to beat the F1 legend.

Tim Shaw puts himself in the firing line in the name of saving us all money and swaps his car for a tired old banger. With the cost of motoring soaring, Tim keeps a video diary of his week to show us if living with a banger offers guilt-free, dirt-cheap motoring... or deep shame and embarrassment.

Tom Ford examines the new Citroën C3 Picasso from the point of view of a true 21st-century family man. By embarking on a day-long mission with the car, he discovers if Citroën have produced a car that is as radical and modern as it looks.

The presenters also settle a raging debate: can the brand new Ford Focus RS take the fight to the Mitsubishi Evo X and win? Jason Plato and Tiff Needell head to the stunning Anglesey test circuit for a dogfight that reveals all.

Finally, Jonny takes Audi’s new Lamborghiniengined supercar, the R8 V10, out on some beautiful Spanish roads. A four-wheel-drive chassis with a V10 engine could be the perfect supercar for the beginner... but have Audi made it just too controllable?
