Again thanks dingo22. it is really amazing what this car was capable of so long ago. I have read several articles that describe this as the best handling Porsche ever and potentially the best handling car ever. I was surprised that the gearbox had none of the problems associated with later versions of the 915 gearbox. Strange that Porsche was able to get the gearbox right on the 2.7 RS and then later cars had a very vague feeling shifter until Porsche went outside to have Borg Warner manufacture the G50 transmission in 1987.

The 2.7 RS is a testament of the affect of weight on a cars performance in both handling, acceleration and braking. If I could have my way every Porsche would come devoid of the power features that have added so much weight over time like power windows, mirrors, seats and locks. Who really needs these? I’ll tell you it is those who want to be seen in a Porsche not those that really want to drive one .

The 3.2L CS was a nice attempt to recapture that flavor in a 911 by shaving 220 lbs. but by then the 911 had gained 340-480 lbs. due to regulations and increases in engine size and associated strengthening of transmissions, brakes and suspensions.

Personally, I think that the 2.7 RS is one of the best looking cars and Porsches of all time. Aesthetically speaking I would prefer it without the ducktail but you can’t argue with the performance benefits the ducktail spoiler added.

Right Car, Wrong Car

You would think that choosing the best 997 was a no-brainer. Chris Harris certainly did, until he took delivery of his Carrera S.

What have they done to it?

Nice performance, ugly looks.... is it really worth modding an already near perfect beast? Especially for 1.5million

Thanks st-anger for scanning those articles. Curious…if you were buying a 997 would you opt for the PCCB?

I think that this is one of the first times I have heard someone say the 911’s brakes faded under heavy use. But then again they cited the steel brakes as hugely impressive .

Thanks for the scans st-anger....look forward to reading them, especially the Carrera S road test to compare it to their thoughts on the Carrera

Some more from the Jan 2005 issue of GT........and the best article of the lot IMO, the 993 GT2 v 996TT X50

Enjoy

just something that the above article (993 GT2 vs 996TT X50) reminded me of: the rear lights of the 996 Turbo's are FUCKIN UGLY...does any1 agree? i dont know why they changed them, the ones on the carreras look much better...maybe cos of the wider wheel arches??

The Man In The Machine

Is the Boxster really Wendelin Wiedeking incarnate? We take a new 2.7 for a spin on UK roads and are struck by how it represents everything that the man behind Porsche stands for.

Thanks st-anger. Nicely written article. I initially was going to put off reading it but I am glad I didn’t. It covered a lot of the issue that I discussed in an earlier post about the troubles at Porsche in the early 90’s.

Personally I don’t like open roadsters. But if I did I think I would chose a Boxster. I think I would buy a Boxster S over a 911 Cabriolet . But the 911 coupe is the car for me .

I confess that I don’t know as much about the Boxster as I should ops: . It is made 100% at and by Porsche isn’t it? Not like the 944 which other than the drivetrain was produced and assembled by Audi at its Neckarsulm plant?

...the Boxster is a 100% Porsche product, all parts are from the Zuffenhausen plant but due to the full workload with the 911 production as well as 955 engine production, the 986/987 and future Cayman are assembled at subcontractor Valmet in Finland...

A Question of Sport

Until the arrival of the GT3 RS, the standard 996 GT3 was the 911 that possessed the ultimate mix of power, tactility and handling prowess. Can the new car take its crown, or do the RS modifications detract from the GT3’s delicacy?
