for jpatino, and anyone else interested, these are the guys I went to see.
Edgar Cruz and
Ruben Romero. They both kicked some serious ass. Ruben is older, I would guess close to 60, has been recording music for 25 years, playing since long before that. Imagine a mexican guy from Santa Fe, playing flamenco for 30-40 years, and hes sitting 15ft from you, and your watching him play. it was nuts. Edgar is a bit younger, playing for 20+ years, not quite is reputable, but good none the less. Ruben is one of the best flamenco guitarists I have ever heard. he played(written and borrowed) some really awesome songs. he has more talent in his left hand than some of the best bands out there, imo. edgar is a little different. he does the flamenco thing right alongside ruben, but not on his own. he does accompaniment with him, cuz hes not really as good. his thing is arranging entire popular culture songs for solo guitar. He makes it sound like the recording, just from his acoustic(steel) guitar. examples he played last nite include, but are not limited to: Bohemian Rhapsody, Hotel California, Johnny B Goode, la Bamba, In the Mood, Classical Gas, Dueling Banjos, the James Bond Theme, etc. The two of them played the best rendition of the classic Malaguena that I've heard.
I heard about these two guys, and the show they put on, because Edgar's brother Mark teaches guitar here at my university. he was (obviously) in the crowd that night, and they invited him up to be a third guitarist in a song called Cuando Caliente el Sol. Ruben said, "Hey this'll be cool, I dont think i've played with mark before!" Mark said, "It'll be better than that, not only dont I know how to play the song, I dont think I've ever heard it!" Ruben - "Ohhh, this outta be great then

" He picked up the rythm rather quickly, and pulled it off ok. The song has a section in it where Ruben would play a lead riff while Edgar(and in this case, Mark) kept the rythm going, and then they'd switch and Edgar would have a lead part. It happens a few times throughout the song. On the last time that happened, Edgar and Ruben both played their parts, went onto the rythm, and stared at Mark. he goes  then makes up something that fit suprisingly well with the piece.
All in all a great night 8)
