215kmh in an Audi A4 turbo in Germany, so it wasn't breaking the law.
Too many speed cameras here in Australia to even bother trying those kind of speeds.

hmmm. I have done most of these a few times and its not that fast really.
Straight line is fairly easy up to about 220. Bends are MUCH more fun!

All speeds seen on the clock in kph:

Porsche 911SC(1980) - 236 (Chased by brother's Audi A4 1.8T. *grin*)
BMW 325i (1989) - 234
Volvo 850 GLT (1995) - 216
BMW 3.0S (1972 auto) - 195
Volvo 164E (1974) - off clock (0ver 200)
VW microbus (80's 2,1 liter) - +/- 170 with the governor being annoying!

oh - and roughly 220kph in a Ferrari 308 QV. Its speedo was broken so had to go by revs and a friend chasing in a 1982 Porsche 911SC.

I got up to redline 5th gear, doing it subconsciously (I honestly didn't mean to get that fast), but when I shifted into 6th and let off, the speedo read 174mph.
what kind of car

Just for info - As far as I know the official timed speed record for a public road may still be the one set up in 1939 by caracciola(Mercedes) and rosemayer(Auto Union) at around 268mph - 430kph.

It was a sad day as Rosemayer died later that day when the car rolled at over 400kph...

A fascinating record of this tragic story can be found here:

Oh My God

Over 300kph is a routine in my life and I am sure, it is a routine for several bikers. But the feeling is the same everyday: Adrenaline.
Your head swinging , eyes wide shut  , could not compare the make of the car far off you You are in the line between death and life ... And believe me, there is a huge difference between 300kph and 325 kph... And so, I could not imagine their feeling while going at 430 kph... Satisfaction guaranteed

225 kmh with a 325is, felt good. As far as riding as a passenger, 270 in an E46 M3 cabrio (for some reason the speed limiter didnĀ“t hit at 250).
