I do not know how insurance works in the USA, but servicing is not so bad.
If it is comparable to South Africa - and the parts prices seem to indicate it will be - a personal Porsche mechanic (Easy to find from a Porsche club I am sure) should run to about $200-$300 per service. Definitely not more than $500!
(My mechanic charges about $50 per hour, service parts about $150)
Some parts can be expensive and US-spec Porsches have extra bits in them to meet emissions standards.
Tyres are cheap enough. A set should be between $400 and $500.
Fuel Consumption is roughly 17mpg for me and I drive very fast. Regularly over 100mph etc. Highway is about 20mpg.
The really expensive fixes sometimes required by older Porsches are gearbox synchros (Around $3000) and Chain Tensioners (About $3000) both including labour. The later Carrera models should not need these repairs.

My car has just hit 165000 miles and they have been very trouble free.

If you are interested a little bit of research and questions to the Porsche club of America is recommended....

A 2004 STi for 23,000 would be beaten to shit and I wouldn't trust it too well.
According to Kelly Blue Book a 2004 STi with 20,000 miles and only a good condition rating is worth $25k from a private party and 28 from a dealer.
yea, i went to kbb and punched in 25000 miles and it gave me 23 something. the only thing keeping me from basically pouncing on one of these is that i know theyve probably been extremely abused, mostly by people who think they know how to drive and dont, and beat the hell out of everything. i mean, the way that these cars are advertised and and talked about, im sure that every single person who has bought one is between 20-30 and was looking to drive really FAST all the time. i think the only option would be to get one certified pre owned and then it would be too expensive compared to privately buying one.
